I am in the process of doing a cam install and am having a little issue with putting in the patriot extreme valve springs. So far I have snapped 2 water pump bolts in the head trying to replace the OEM springs and I have a couple questions.
I am using the "cheap" crowbar type took that you bolt into the rocker hole (it is know to snap bolts due to the pressure exerted) and have snapped a couple bolts. Would it be a good idea to try a grade 8 bolt instead of the waterpump bolts? I believe the bolt is M8x1.25x70 but haven't been able to find a grade 8 in this size. Or would I be better off using a different tool? I tried the spring compressor that hooks on with a screw top, but it is dangerous since it does not hook to the inner spring (patriot extremes are the dual spring type) and has shot off a couple times. I do not want to spend $100 bucks on a tool to use once. Any other ideas?
Second question is I drilled out the bolts and used a bolt extractor to remove. I then used a pen magnet to pick up as much metal and shavings as possible. Will I be safe in assuming that everything else not picked up will be caught in the oil and removed with the next oil change or should I attempt a more detailed cleaning? If so with what?
Not sure if the LS1 dual spring tool works for an LS3 head? or do you have an LS2?
BUT I'll rent you the tool for $20 and you send it back when your done. You pay a deposit and shipping... 11.00 for shipping $100 for the deposit...return the tool deposit goes back to you

Hello all,

Thanks
Clean the metal out completely. Those filings can/will do damage before they get filtered out.
Start by sealing off any holes to the lower section of the motor. Use tape or even shop rags to plug the holes. Then use a good shop vac to suck up all you can. After that use some brake clean on a rag to pick up some more that may be trapped by oil. You can finish with compressed air and more brake clean spray, but be careful not to blow it into the motor.
Find a good nut/bolt shop in your area and buy some good quality grade 8 bolts.
Why are you using water pump bolts? Those are not the same grade as the rocker bolts and easy to break. The rocker bolt work fine when replacing the valvesprings.
