TPMS question...
If I were to take off my wheels in order to better clean the inner barrels and brake calipers, and reinstall the tires in the same corners, do I have to reset the pressure monitoring system?
I would assume not, but want to know for sure before I do anything as I do not have a reset tool. On another note, is there no way to reset without a tool? I ask as I CAN do it without a tool on our Escalade- by a few simple steps...
Thanks!
Nate
You cannot reset without a tool.
Here's the YouTube video posted by one of the Forum Members on how to do it -

with deecount - no problem at all taking off your wheels and reinstalling them. The tire pressure sensor ID#'s are stored in the TPMS memory and aren't dropped out just because the wheels are removed.Even if you put the wheels back on the opposite side of the car, or if the sensors get mixed up when new tires are getting mounted, the sensors will still transmit and the TPMS will receive the signals, but the DIC display wouldn't correspond to the correct corner - i.e., if the DIC says "Right Front 23 psi" but the sensor that was programmed in as the RF is now on the LR, then the LR is the tire with a problem.
I looked in your profile and it looks like you have a 2008 C6.
The 2005-2009 C6 tire pressure sensors must have a signal from a TPMS tool to trigger them during the programming procedure.
The 2010 and newer C6 uses a different TPMS and sensor and the sensors can be triggered by changing air pressure in the tire during the programming procedure - just like your Escalade.
HOWEVER - apparently in January of 2011, GM changed the programming in the TPMS's of all GM vehicles that could use the air change method so that a TPMS tool will be required for all GM vehicles built in January 2011 or after (see the explanation in the GM document linked below).
GM has made a TPMS tool available for $58.20 for owners that have sensors that require a tool. I don't know whether it's available at GM dealer parts departments, but there's a link the end of the document below that will take you to where you can order it for $58.20 (the document actually references a $43.65 price, but I think that's the dealer's price):
