Just received my second 5K oil analysis from Blackstone. Everything looks good except for a high iron number. You can view the report here. http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/...lum/img012.jpg
Has anyone seen a number like this? Thanks. Frank
No metal particles on the plug either time other than the black oily residue that shows on the rag. Same stuff that shows on all magnetic plugs. I took the samples mid way through the oil drain just as I have on several other vehicles over the years. I am not too worried about the cooper because it went down. I have the Z51 package and understand there is an oil cooler. That might be where the copper is coming from. My Duramax was always a little high. Evidently there are not too many folks here that have their oil analyzed. Later! Frank
Interesting. So far I've only done one oil analysis on my 06Z and I had elevated iron as well but not as high as your report shows - it was in the low 50s if I recall. Copper was fairly low. Blackstone indicated that, in my case, it was because the oil was in use fairly long - unknown mileage, oil monitor was at 10%.
Never considered doing an oil analysis on my vette because I've never had an oil related failure on any GM vehicle in 35+ years of running them stupid hard. I have had motor issues, but nothing an oil analysis would have prevented. What does the company doing the oil analysis say about your numbers?
That has been the norm for all mine over the last fifteen years. Later! Frank
I must have had a senior moment when I typed the above sentence. I recalled later that the first time I sampled my 93 LT1 it was really bad also. The iron was 125 and copper was at 9. Three thousand miles later the numbers were 26 on the iron and 3 on the copper. I guess I won't worry about at this point. I am going to call Blackstone to make sure I took the sample right. Thanks for the replies. Later! Frank
Iron, aluminum and lead are elevated. Is this a forced induction engine? The iron is likely coming from the cylinders and it is specially high. Should probably be no more than 30ppm for that mileage. Copper is ok...these engines shed copper for years then settle.
Since the silicone is fairly low, I doubt you have bad filtration. Also, there is no antifreeze in the oil. This points toward a possible mechanical failure or extreme friction on the cylinders due to forced induction.
