I got this message a couple months ago and discovered the gas cap wasn't twisting on fully, as the teeth in the cap were wearing away. I got a new gas cap from my local Chevy parts department. After using the new cap, it was obvious to me the old cap was done.
Bill,
After installing a new cap, I weighted over night, started the car and am still getting the message. I forgot to mention that I got some gas at a independent station, close to the Mexican border before the check gas cap message originally appeared. Normally I use Chevron, but this was a panic buy, as I was on empty. Could bad gas cause the problem?
If I'm not mistaken its the loss of vacuum in the emissions system that triggers this code and not the actual cap itself other than its a bad sealing cap. or a leak in a hose that leads from gas tank to intake manifold will cause it also.
Had a check cap light in my Pick Up truck but I found the fault in a cracked hose behind the drivers front headlight area.

Waiting overnight will have no effect, problem occurs while car is running. It will take some driving to clear it. The computer queiries the emissions system only occasionally and the next time it does it'll discover its working fine and light will go out.
Like ALS 08 said, it can any any air leak in the system. I had this problem on my 05 C6, it ended being a hose leak. Its most likely the issue if the cap is not the issue.
