Yesterday on the way home I noticed my trans temp was 234*. I was on the Hardy toll road and traffic was moving about 5-10mph for about 5 miles before it began to move again. My engine temps where about 210-220*, the temp outside was 99*. This scared me so last night I ordered a 24K external cooler for my car and will install it next week. Is 234* normal for the transmission?
This morning I was watching like a hawk
9 mins of driving
oil temp 203
coolant 176
trans 185
outside temp 81
speed 65 mph
My car has a 160* therm
Once I got on the freeway my engine temps ran 185-190 and the trans ran about the same.
I just got back from the dealership, I had them change my oil and check the transmission fluid level. The level was fine but the tech said my transmsission coolant line was up against my header. He said he was able to move it about 1 to 1.5" away but suggested I cover the line with some kind of heat wrap. Could this be what was making my trans temps so high?
Most definitely. Those headers get really hot and expecially in 99 degree weather. So if you're coolant line was right up against the line then it was heating up the line which was heating the fluid that much more.
Good call on having the fluid changed. Keep that line away. Use some zip-ties and some heat wrap wouldn't hurt.

most likely the stop and go because of the converter, the header didnt help, but you need a trans cooler
I don't know if he had the trans fluid changed, I'm getting the impression that he only had his engine oil changed and the trans fluid level checked.
But I could be wrong.

I had the oil changed, when I add the cooler next week I will change the trans fluid. What is the best synthetic trans fluid for our cars and how much do I need to get?

That 24,000 BTU cooler will definetely help and more so if it's a stack plate design. I just installed a B&M 14,000 BTU cooler and the highest temperatues I've seen are 183* in stop and go Texas scorching heat. I decided to go in series after my Yank 3200 install. I can send you a parts list that you can use to plumb your cooler in series and - if you're using 1/2"NPT threads on your auxillary cooler. Your trans cooler lines will connect to the upper factory hard line and to the upper radiator port. No hacking - no leaks and it looks great with the stainless steel braided hose and anodized fittings. Good luck. Email me @ lpg1045@rgv.rr.com.
I have an '05 A-4.Originally it had Dexron lll. Then I had the trans flush @ dealership and they used the current Dexron Vl. My trans temp jumped by 30 deg. They couldn't find any explanation and the GM techline said as long as it's not "20-30" degrees above the engine temp it's alright.
Guys I will install an external cooler next week and I will bypass the radiator cooler. Friday night at the track my trans temps went to 220* after two passes. This morning I wrapped my header at the collector / O2 sensor area because this is where the coolant lines are right against the header. I wrapped the header with header wrap and it is a little more then a 1 foot section. Will this cause any problems for me?
I'm using a B&M 15K btu stacked plate cooler with no fan and bypassing the radiator cooler on my Yank 3600 stalled A6. It's mounted horizontally at the bottom of the radiator.
In spirited mountain runs and 110+ desert heat in heavy traffic the tranny temps have never exceeded 190. Engine coolant has been as high as 226 and oil in the 230+ range. So bypassing the radiator has kept both the trans and engine cooler. That's not reccommended unless you never drive in cold weather, as the trans may never reach reasonable operating temps.
