Default A6 durability?

What are the power capabilities of the A6? Has anyone experienced any problems with less than 500rwhp? I'm figuring with 460-475, I should be able to hit bottom 11s. Will the trans hold up if I don't add a torque converter? Will adding a converter and cooler lessen the life of the A6? Sorry for all the questions, but can't find any concreate info. Thanks in advance.

Well over 300 passes so far on a bolt-on LS3 and 91K DD. I might be starting to have slippage on the 3-4 shift, but I cross the stripe in 3rd, so it's hard to tell what happens at WOT. Had the stock converter until 55K then 3200 to 71K and now 3600.

From what I've seen discussed around here, with under 500rwhp you'll be fine but.......the trans tune is critical to use and longevity.

I suggest you might want to talk to thesubfloor. He's kind of the defacto A6 expert as he has pushed it farther than most, at least of those willing to tell. Just for your info, here's his running thread about his newest built/modded A6 by Century Trans. Keep in mind he's running the A6 behind an LS7. Good luck.

Adding a cooler should only help actually, adding a converter on the other hand can maybe work against it but mine (and many other's) has held up fine so far.

I'm only making just under 400rwhp but I do have LOTS of passes on my A6, many of them with a converter as well and it's holding up strong so far.

Although it's the torque that'll actually end up hurting the transmission, it was only when I went beyond 550rwhp that I was able to break several 6L80's in a very short period of time (23 passes each at the track with both a low mileage unit from a 2008 as well as one the dealership rebuilt for me). The only reason I can't tell you the associated torque is that I almost never dyno my car (probably 3 times in the 4-1/2 years I've owned it).

I built and tuned my buddy's car who lives in AZ (Sl33per) and with about 440rwhp (he doesn't dyno his car much either) it'll run 11.0 flat all day long and also pulled off a 10.85 in January here in Sacramento followed by a 10.863 at Speedworld with a 1.499 60ft when they had a brief cold spell not too long after that.

I just texted him to find out how many passes he has on the car but since he hasn't responded yet I'm gonna guess he's made at least 400 with it and the car also has over 70K miles.

With a stock converter you'll probably run about 3/10ths slower than with a higher stall so I think you're gonna need a little more HP to hit low 11's without changing it.

Thanks, now I know how far I may go with mods.

My car is lightly modified about 420 rwhp & 400 rwtq I have around 120,000 miles on my 07 with zero problems. They are built pretty strong.

There was a post here awhile ago that explained how trannies where rated. If I remember right it was 24hrs at full hp and torque. I also seem to remember it is rated for something like 480hp and 450ft lbs of torque.
