Got my car apart for fuel pump and transmission upgrades. I decided to throw in a ZR1 clutch and slave package I picked up in the For Sale section. This will be my first time swapping a clutch and I'm wondering if an alinement tool is needed.
Absolutely, and it must have an extra long splined section due to the dual friction plates. I got one off of ebay for $24 delivered, lists for about $125, if I remember correctly. If you cannot get a good deal, you can borrow mine.

It uses the same tool GM has been using for the last 10 years at least. Go to you local parts store and pick one up for less than 10 bucks. I just installed the LS9x clutch a few weeks ago.

Were you able to use the C6 clutch slave or does the LS9x require the ZR1 slave?
It's a great clutch, I really don't feel any extra pressue on the pedal but the wife say she can. It really hooks up good though. Still having a problem launch the car though. Even at 4 grand it will bog the engine when my r-compounds are warmed up.

Almost sounds like the clutch may hook to good for your power level.

Sorry for the kind of "thread hijack". Could you be more specific for a noob to both Vettes and the USA! I currently have my C6 in bits in the garage and have wasted a whole afternoon trying to get my clutch aligned with the universal tool from Harbour freight. Could do with a steer in the right direction so as not to waste any more valuable time.

I'm in Vegas if it helps.
Thanks.
This is my first time also and I haven't got that far, but I'm sure some old pro will be along shortly. Thanks for being legal. Glad you're here.
I think you could get a universal tool to work but it is always best to have the right one. What you want is the 1-1/8 x 26 spline clutch alignment tool. I bought just a cheap plastic one and it worked fine.
One thing about putting it back together, make sure that the guide pins are properly lined up. Even off by a little will cause alot of pain. Also you will not be able. by hand, to fully insert the torque tube. Remember you needed to use a screw driver to pry it apart. You should be able to insert it all but the last 1/4-3/8 of an inch. At that point insert the bolts and walk it in slow and evenly. It should move forward with every turn of the wrench. If not you are binding somewhere and have a problem.
It really helps to have 2 or even 3 people to get it back together.
If you use the correct alignment tool (it must have splines, and long ones at that, and not the smooth plastic ones found at most auto parts stores) and use it correctly (i.e. inserted well in to the pilot bearing), you will have no alignment problems.
