Default 05 Automatic Q's

just wanted to know if there is a seperate controller/programer for the auto in a 2005 C6?
wanted to see if there was a way to increase the firmness in shifts

i know the older autos (t350/400/700r4) you used shift kits

since i am new to the vettes and late model stuff (performance wise) wanted to see what options are out there

thanks

Yes, there are hand held programmers that you can buy to alter some (but not all) parameters of your transmission but they won't be able to do nearly as much for it as a knowledgeable/experienced late model GM (Corvette/Camaro/Firebird/GTO) tuning specialist can do with his laptop and appropriate software (HP Tuners, EFI Live etc.).

trying to see what my options are as far as making improvements for the trans in the car

Yes, there is a separate transmission computer (TCS) that can be tuned. There are vendors such as Corvettes of Westchester (Chuck CoW) and ECS (Doug), both Forum Vendors that you can send your TCM to for a new tune or they can sell you a hand held tuner with the tune loaded to upgrade your transmission tune. Iv'e seen them advertise this for the A6, not the A4, so I'm not 100% sure they provide this capability for the A4. A quick call will get you your answers.

This probably won't tell you what you want but.......GM's description of the '05 4L65E:

Durable 4L65-E delivers automatic performance

The available automatic transmission in the C6 is the new Hydra-Matic 4L65-E four-speed. An upgraded version of the C5’s 4L60-E, the “L65” is strengthened and revised to accommodate the LS2’s 400 lb.-ft. of torque.

To beef up the internals, a five-pinion planetary gear set was added – replacing a four-pinion gear set. The extra gear reduces friction and loads carried by all the gears. The washers between the gear sets are made from Teflon, allowing optimal operation at high speed.

For protection from the high temperatures that are generated by high speed, a four-plate oil cooler has been added. When the transmission fluid reaches 127 degrees Celsius (approximately 260 F), the torque converter lock does not disengage, except briefly during shifts. This prevents fluid shear in the torque converter from adding heat to the transmission.

The 4L65-E uses a highly advanced electronic controller that has been specifically calibrated for Performance Algorithm Shifting. This technology automatically selects the optimal gear for a given driving condition, making it a willing accomplice for performance driving and hard cornering. The 4L65-E transmission shifts at higher rpm, compared to the C5’s 4L60-E, to take advantage of the LS2’s higher horsepower and rev range.

If you aren't in a hurry just give this thread a few days to be viewed by members who know more, I'm sure you'll get good answers. Or maybe call RPM Transmissions and ask. They have done a lot of conversions putting 4L60's and I think 65's in Z06's and such. Good luck.

i'm trying to find out options, so if i need to wait, i'll wait
i am new to all the EFI/electronic stuff (was never able to afford those type of cars and now i can) so its a learning curve for me

was hopeing to get something for tomorrow since i am tinkering on the car this weekend for her

i wasn't sure if it was programable via the SLP/Predator programer or its a seperate thing all together

just remember i have been car-less for 3 years (Long story), just spent 3 months restoring my TA, and now onto the wifes toy, which i told her i will make an awesome ride out it.

i am somewhat intimidated by the EFI stuff, but at the same time so anxious to learn
believe me, i look at my TA now and think a newer vette with endless EFI stuff is seeming more interesting... just gotta recoupe from that finanical DISASTER and PHUCKING my friend (or thought so) did to us

Oh, you were actually asking about a separate computer within the transmission itself?
I thought you were merely asking about the various hand held programmers (Diablo, SCT, Hypertech etc.) that are out there.

As mentioned above, I know the 2006 and up 6 speed automatics have a separate computer (Transmission Control Module) within them but the 2005 4 speed automatic is somewhat unique, it's similar to the 2004 C5's automatic but is controlled slightly differently.

The A4's can be tuned. Give Chuck @ Corvettes of Westchester a shout. My 2005 has his "A4 Attack Tune" and I could not be happier. It's not going to happen over night though. You either have t pull your unit and send it to him or order the AutoCal from him.

I initially sent my entire PCM to Chuck for an Engine and Transmission tune. sent it out and had it back in like 4 days. I have since purchased the AutoCal and am very pleased with the "live tuning" that Chuck is able to do. Tuning your car using the AutoCal is far superior to dyno-tuning, in my opinion, due to the real-world variables you are able to obtain, see and log. I don't think Chuck would mind if I post his phone number here since it can be found elswhere here on CF. Give him a shout. He can explain everything in detail to you. He can also verify turn-around times for you.

Nice, so you do have a wideband (A/F, O2 etc.) hooked up as well I assume?
That AutoCal sounds pretty cool.
