Heavens, I have already read that in the owners manual. On the battery it says model number 85H. I figure that is just an A.C. Delco number. I want to know what the group number is so that I can look at alternative brands.

Don't know what to tell you. Our club was on a trip and one of our member's 07 C6 coupe had a dead battery at the lodge. Jump started his car and drove it to a small WalMart in Ozark, Arkansas on a Sunday morning. The store did not have the Auto service dept, just part of the store that sold oil, batteries, wax, etc. Walked out into Walmart's lot with a new battery, and using borrowed tools from Walmart, installed the battery(a perfect fit), and then went on to enjoy our weekend excursion. The battery even had the vent so it could be installed in a rear mounted location, such as the Z06.
2005--86 series
2006--90 series
2007--90 series
2008--85 series
2009--85 series
2010--85 series
85 series----9 1/16" L X 6 13/16" W X 8" H
86 series----9 1/16" L X 6 13/16" W X 8" H
90 series----9 11/16 L X 6 7/8" W X 6 7/8" H
Every year uses the same size battery except for the 2006 & 2007, which is different. Being that the 85 & 86 series batteries are smaller length and width, then 90 series, the 2006 & 2007 can use the either of them instead of the 90 series as a replacement.
I have not measured the battery trays, so I don't know if they changed with the 2006 & 2007.
The tray never changed. The 2005 uses to the 86 because the 2004 did, the 05 and 06 took a 90 or T5, because GM was going with EN size batteries in all vehicles. They changed to the 85 because they felt needed more capacity. The 85 and 86 are much taller that the 90 or T5, thus more capacity.
I work the company that supplies the batteries to GM.
Like I said in my post, I didn't measure the battery trays of the different years. A question I have. Since the 2005 was the first year of the C6 and Gm elected to use the group 86 battery at 8" tall, they designed the tray to allow the battery to sit lower so the door to the cabin filter could be opened to service the cabin filter. For 2007 they went to a lower battery, then in 2008 back to the taller battery. My question is why are some people having to remove their battery to service their cabin filter, but not others. If the trays were the same, then wouldn't the tray be built to accomidate the tall battery used in the first year of the C6 production? Then, no matter what height battery is used, 85, 86 or 90, they would all have clearance for the drop down cabin filter panel.
I just installed a DieHard Group 47 in my son's 08 coupe last Saturday. The Group 47 has an identical LxW but is 5/8" taller than a Group 90 which I assumed was the OEM size as that's what is in my 07 vert. Well the 47 wouldn't quite fit width-wise. I had to remove the tray and cut the front lip off as other vette owners have done. Still wouldn't fit as the Die Hard case mounting flange was too thick to allow the case to push all the way back in the tray. So I took a Dremel with a grinding wheel and took the excess upper flange material off the battery case backside and then I was able to get the front locking tab bolt to finally engage its tray nut threads when the case could fit into the back of the tray.

The battery tray inserts over a vertical steel post which I assume is an integral attachment to the vehicle frame. Four (13mm socket) hex head bolts attaches the tray to the steel post inside the post. Unless GM varied the overall height of this vertical mounting post, I don't know how GM could have varied the height of the battery tray from year to year.
Three years ago I put a DieHard Group 47 battery into my 06Z06. It fit fine but needed a universal top strap plus longer holddown rods. Height-wise, there is no way an 8" tall Group 85 will fit into the rear compartment of a Z car. I checked my 2011 ZR1 and its OEM Delco is a Group 90. I suspect GM has been installing Group 90 batteries in all of the Z06 and ZR1 cars since 2006. I have no info on the engine compartment mounted batteries other than my 07 vert which has a Group 90 OEM Delco. I failed to check the battery size on my son's 08 when I removed it last Sat but had assumed it was a Group 90 because it was the only size that appeared to allow access to the cabin filter just like my 07 vert. It is now partially blocked by the 7-1/2" tall Group 47 I installed. See Post #9.

COSTCO sells a Group 47 that measures 7" high (6 1/2 W x 9 1/2 L) for $65.99 with a 100 month Warranty, First 3 years free exchange. Looks like it will fit and still give access to cabin filter. Battery specs 590 Cold Cranking same as OEM Delco. Store Rack Code is 12.
Most excellent post!!! Thanks for sharing. Though I had to trim my son's 08 coupe tray and also the Group 47 battery to make it fit, I now know why. I should be able to install a Group 47 in my 07 vert someday without those mods.
