Going to pull the trigger soon on an MGW shifter. I’ve got a 2005 C6 and George at MGW told me that I should first update to the newer shifter box # 25823572 when I install the mgw. Is this totally necessary to drop the addition $130.00 on the updated box ? I do get a little buzz from it when flat out in 2nd gear.
Normally, it was the earlier Z06s that could benefit from the standard C6 shifter box - in theory, the one already in your car. I know that *my* Z06 certainly was better with the base box.
Are you sure that George understood that you don't have a Z06? Or maybe he's just trying to shake things up a bit and hope that a newer box will fix your buzzing before installing the shifter. This is the first I've heard of such an idea - a new shifter box for a base C6. Odd.
Before popping for the $$ you might want to talk with George again, make sure you're both on the same page, and have him explain his thinking.
Thanks, i think your are correct. He must have thought that I have a Z06. The buzzing only occurs if I don't get my hand off the shifter quick enough when I'm hard on the throttle after getting into 2nd gear.
BUT...these boxes only last in my experience about 3 years 30k miles before the seals in the pivot rod break down from heat aging and corrosion.
so if you have a 3 plus old car you WILL benefit from putting a new box in whether you have a z06 or not.
i know its 130 bucks but thats pretty small change for the investment in this type car.

Ah, yet another twist to the shifter box tale
Thanks, George, for both a great product and great service!
I'm still loving my shifter and I've been planning for weeks now to open things up and lube everything so now I'll check for this, too.
I was recently chatting about this very issue with Rich @ Abel Chevy (RichieRichZ06) and he mentioned that he usually carries several of the shifter boxes in stock. Hmmm... I'm definitely over 30K miles on mine...
Per George's recommendation & many posts, I installed a MGW shifter on my 2006 Z06 along with a C6 shifter box. It works great without any noise issues. Thanks for a fantastic product!
@ Zoxxo. Could Rich at abel install this ..??? My car is going there in a few weeks for an overhaul. AS for the MGW is there a setting on the handle to make it lower than stock using their race ****...?? I hate the height of the stock position.

Hmmmm, if you mean "lower than the stock position of an MGW" I dunno. If you mean "lower than the stock Corvette shifter" then installing an MGW + race **** will definitely move the **** down a bit. My 2007 Z has an MGW shifter with the race **** and it's decidedly lower than the stock ****. Just remember that the MGW already ups the leverage requirements so shortening the thing even more may make it hard enough to shift that you wouldn't be happy with it.
Of course, I can't speak for Abel but given the work they have done on my car, on my wife's car, and on many other Corvettes every day of the week, I'm thinkin' that your shifter will be a no-brainer. Abel does pretty much everything and they do it all quite well.
You should call them (or pm RichieRichZ06) and discuss it.
I installed my shifter and kept the original box and so far have no noise issues. I did notice some exterior fraying on the rear pivot shaft seal and put some rtv on it to firm it up.
I too am getting ready to go with one of these MGWs and already ordered the new shifter box and will get that installed before ordering the new MGW shifter. I spoke with George and he went far above and beyond answering all my questions.
I would like to lube things up while I have this all apart and am wondering what parts do I lube and what lube to use?
