Default New odd noise under acceleration

I have noticed an odd noise under certain conditions recently. I’ve noticed the sound when initially traveling around 50mph, as well as around 70mph. Under mid-throttle from those speeds, the car makes an odd gurgling (best description I could think of) sound and then goes back to normal. If I’m only going ~30mph and hit it a bit, the car accelerates smoothly with no additional noise other than what I’m accustomed to.

I’ve tried goosing it at some other speeds, but it doesn’t always have the same result. It has a slight metal sound to it, but I hesitate to call it a grinding sound of any kind as it doesn’t sound that painful. The metal aspect of it sounds more like rattling/clanking than grinding (exhaust pipes possibly?). It sounds like it would be coming from just below the radio-a/c area, but given the resonance at different rpms, that could be way off.

Any ideas you guys have to throw my way? Are there any other signs to watch out for? All information is appreciated as always.

I have a 2005 A4 coupe with just over 20,000 miles. I’m really hoping this is not transmission related.

Its a longshot to guess from that description. I would get it on a lift and see if you see anything. The only Thing that pops into my mind is cats. Mine made rattling noises under acceleration when they were shot.

My '05 had a similar noise and it was the A/C compressor going bad. Had it replaced a few summers ago on extended warranty.

I don't think it's the cats. They've only been on for a year. I'm going to try and replicate the noise again on the way home from work...hopefully it disappears, but maybe I can narrow it down more.

Did you notice any other symptoms with this issue?

I doubt it's related, but I have noticed with my auto-temp feature, if I restart the car and it was previously on auto, I have to click the manaul fan once and go back to auto for it to kick in sometimes.

I believe that the A/C had to be on to hear the noise. But the A/C still worked fine as I recall.

We had something like that when our 2006 A6 was new. Under moderate acceleration starting around 50-60 mph, something would make a slight jingling or chirping sound for maybe 5 seconds, then the noise would cease even if i continued to accelerate.

It did that for maybe the first 5k miles, then stopped doing it and never came back. Sold the car ar 44k miles, still no noise.

Hmmmmm.... without hearing the sound, it is hard to determine what you are speaking about.... but with that said, there has been several posts regarding noise emitting from the Harmonic balancer ( it is best described, if you dont know where to look, as the bottom "pully" ) .... I would look to see if it has a wobble -- if it does, that may be the source of your noise -- there are several threads about this and examples of the noise it makes.

I will definitely check this out.

I tried to replicate the sound with a/c on and off, but heavy Dallas traffic paired with the note out of my headers sure makes it hard to duplicate and hear consistently.

I had the car up on a lift on Saturday.....naturally the sound didn't happen before then.
