Default Getting a Complete Kooks system...but ?

I just ordered a complete KOOKS header system X pipe etc. everything except the mufflers...

My Question is will I be losing a lot of "potential HP" by leaving the stock mufflers on my 05 (A4) I had driven another 05 with aftermarket mufflers, and the "Drone" was a killer after 1 hr of driving...I also am planning on a cam & FAST intake (in the future) but for now its just the KOOKS headers & system back to the mufflers...

Will the stock 05 mufflers kill any advantage I'll get from the new header system ??

Ive always heard mufflers are almost entirely for sound and if your plans only go as far as bolt ons or even staying sub 500hp I don't see mufflers as being a restriction. That being said I have the Kooks, their catless X, and Corsa exhaust and I love it! It is loud and at low RPM there is drone.

I'm getting the KOOKS "with" cats, and hoping I wont get "Drone" because of using stock mufflers.. I expect it to be a little louder (which is good ) but do NOT want the Dreaded Drone" I'm willing to give up 7-10 HP by using the stock mufflers just to avoid drone...

John, while there are some (not all) aftermarket cat back exhaust systems that will give some very minor (maybe 5rwhp?) gains over the stock LS2 system, it's generally considered just not worth it.
Most systems for these cars are VERY expensive and of course the noise level might become annoying for you and the wife on those trips you sometimes take with the car.
I still have the stock cat back (with headers) on my car and it is a little 'quiet' at times but 1) my car is still damn fast with it and 2) I'm up to $1300.00 (it's almost like getting free headers ) wealthier because of it. It's usually a toss up, the stock cat back might be too quiet but some of the aftermarket choices might be too loud as well.
I would think the only systems that could possibly add some more notable power gains (and some weight savings) are maybe the B&B Bullet system and/or the SLP Loudmouth...but you would likely find them OBNOXIOUSLY loud, especially once the cam goes in.

jpee,

Did the following to my exhaust, nice sound and no drone plus you can do yourself($0). Look at page 9 post #175 for a complete DIY.

You'll be okay. I had Kooks, B&B Bullets on my 2000 and it would wake the dead.

I did what your going to do---stock mufflers will be just a bit noiser, I just recently installed--Corsa Sport mufflers--I have a cam----much louder at start up---NO highway drone !! at any speed--sounds like a Harley at slow speed--BUT at full throttle---YIKES !! My advice, forget the mufflers until you do all your engine mods first---$1300 for mufflers---they sold a ton of them at Carlisle this year-----

Stock mufflers will work fine. You won't gain quite as much HP as with aftermarket mufflers but you will gain more Torque than the guys doing mufflers with headers.

You shouldn't have any drone with the stock mufflers, I didn't but have an M6 (not sure if that matters) I am running AR Headers with high flow cats. I switched out to NPP mufflers and can have it LOUD with the mufflers open or quieter than the stock C6 mufflers when the NPP's are closed.

Congrats on the Kook's headers!
