Default Another oil temp question...

After doing a search of this question it appears that most get confused and answer with water coolant temps in mind, so hence the question just for clarification....

What is the avg normal ENGINE oil temp for a base C6 A6 (tune, ported tb/manifold,headers,CAI,Z06 diff)?

I reached 248* yesterday highway driving at avg of 80mph in 92* weather in S mode targa top off (paddles not used).
I did notice when hitting wet roads (after rain in that area) and turning off AC, the temps dropped about 15*! Turned AC back on and temp only climbed to about 238*

I'm thinking of getting both engine AND trans oil coolers...

Thanks.

Can't answer YOUR question as requested but can answer about my Oil Temp on a 06 LS2 MN6 Vert..... Daytime temps over 100 degrees stock stat (190) - top up and/or down..... similar speeds that you ask about

Oil temp has never exceeded 214. Water temp hovers under 200. Normal Op Oil temp hits near max before I tend to step on my little beast hard. My mods are similar to your list.

Idea - C6's are notorious for catching 'crap' in the radiator fins...... BLOW compressed air from backside of ALL Radiators to blow 'crap' out of fins and see if you see improvement. Your oil temp seems too high (try a new sensor / borrow one from a friend??)

248 is rather high for normal highway driving with an outside temp of 92. Our 2006 would typically have been around 220-225 under those conditions, and our 2009 would be maybe 5' higher.

BUT, you are running a Z06 diff, which means a 3.42 axle, right? Instead of the 2.54 or 2.73 that would normally be in the car. That means you are runing significantly higher RPM than normal, and high RPM can really raise the oil temp.

So my guess is that nothing is "wrong" except for your axle ratio.
With mods like that, and the implied hard running that goes with them, I'd get at least a Z51 oil cooler or maybe a Z06 oil cooler. And the biggest B&M trans cooler you can buy.

Do you have a 160 t-stat? What were your water temps when your oil was at 240* and above?

My oil temp hovers around my coolant temp (180-190deg) within 5* with normal driving. This my base MN6 H/C with C6Z oil cooler.

I only hit over 200* when really beating on the car.

Normally oil temp is within +/-15 degrees of the coolant temp. However, if you have changed the rear axle ratio and are spinning the motor more the temp will go up. With my C5s I saw my on track oil temps approach 300 degrees on the 97 and 320 on the 03Z but around town the oil temps were close to the coolant temp. With my C6Z oil temps will hit 260 on the track with a 220+ coolant temp. Around town the Z's oil temp is also close to the coolant temp which usually stays right around 200 with the stock thermostat.

My stock rear end is 3.42

Echo - try a new sensor / borrow one from a friend. Either of these alternatives would be much cheaper than springing for both engine AND trans oil coolers!

I do... I think my trans temp was 214 and coolant was 208 (+/-)
Also for what it may worth, the DIC Says oil is at 36%...

Same here. I have Z07 radiator with a Z06 oil cooler.

I have not noticed any higher oil temps with the installation of 4:10 differential.

I usually do not push the car very hard either in higher rpm range.

Some CAI divert air away from the rad. and will slightly elevate coolant and oil temps. My 06 LS2 with a 160 stat @ 75 degrees ambient will run 178 coolant, 210 oil. When I was experimenting with my own versions of "vette air " and "vararam " , those temps climbed 5 to 10 degrees. Also check intake side of rad. for debris, you'll be amazed at what some C6'6 accumulate there.

I run in about this range but it has been Hot in Texas this year. I don't worry about it though because i use Brad penn oil and anything under 300 is safe.
