Noise in drivetrain help please
Bought a 2006 Z06 and notice some strange noises from the drivetrain. This is a 15k mile car from the original owner who states it's made the noise from minute 1 and dealer says its normal. The noise seems to come from clutch area and is in 1st, 2nd, and a little in 3rd under very light load clutch fully engaged. Hard take offs does not produce the noise. The owner claims dealer says it's normal and more noticeable because the 06 has no insulation to keep it lighter ???? I know it's hard to diagnose noises but I could not find any other threads that sound like my symptoms. I might add that I've owned other Z06's and never heard this in them other than in 1st gear and only very briefly . Thanks
I'm guessing it sounds like marbles in a metal can and goes away when you push the clutch in. I had a 96 Trans Am that did the same thing and even GM Europe ended up saying it was normal. Driving thru small towns drove me nuts over there.
The Z06s are noisy cars. Period. They make all sorts of weird clicks and clunks and whirrs and rattles and the like. It took me quite a while to get used to it. At 62k miles on my car I still marvel at all the "wrong" noises it generates.
And yes, the "marbles in a can" sound is 100% normal. Weird Z06 sound #29

Thanks guys, marbles in a can may do it for a description. The original owner said he drove it off the showroom floor and went down the street only to turn around and go right back to complain. The dealer took him back to the service area where the mechanic said it was 100% normal as annoying as it is. I'm not thrilled with it and my 07 and 08 did not do it. I'm going to take it to a performance shop to get an opinion from the owner.
The marbles sound could be the springs in the clutch rattling around with light or no load. Both my stock and LS7 clutch have that sound. Other things could be a throwout bearing, although less likely. Older F-bodies were notorious for the throwout bearing housing wallowing out the plastic in the clutch plate causing a rattle.
I may be out to lunch, who knows. I've had both clutches in my hands the past couple months I noticed the springs slide back and forth in their housing. Wish I had a pic to explain better.
Anybody got a pic of an LS7 pressure plate assembly?
The springs in the pressure plate aren't loaded if that's what you're asking. Under no load they are free to move inside their housing, maybe 1/4" back and forth. Could be the noise you are hearing.
Try to find a pic of an LS7 pressure plate and you will see what I'm talking about
Can't post the pic from my phone, but here's a link. I may have been mistaken... I could have been thinking if the disk springs, not pressure plate springs. My memory is fading quicker than I thought...
If it's the "marbles in a can" noise we're talking about, the answer is "yes."
Do a search on "marbles" + "can" in the C6 Z06 forum and a LOT of threads from the past 6 years will come up with folks asking the same question that you are. It's a normal part of the Z06 experience. *I* asked it when I first got my new 2007 Z06. Seemed wrong to me, too. But it's normal. Mine still does it.
Thanks for all the help. Sounds like a Yugo going from light to light. It's driving me crazy
Get past it. If you're going to let that (small) sound ruin the joy of havng a Z06 then you need to rethink your motivation for having such a car.
No one hears that sound but you. I just consider it part of having a "race car for the street." I didn't get a Z06 to have a luxo thing so if it makes "race car" sounds, all the better, IMO.
My owners manual video (vhs btw) for my 02 Vette has a segment on this "marbles in a can" sound. It's the transmission and it's normal...if I recall the video.
