Default C6 Tunnel heat, solutions/options

Didn't find anything when searching the archives.
Anyone try just creating a wind scoop/diversion to flow air through the tunnel? (observe the brake ducting that feeds from under the vehicle to the rear brakes).

Seems as though circulation of air through there may move the heat away.

Just a thought.

Insulated tunnel plate from Elite Engineering will lower tunnel temp significantly, as well as improve torsional stability.

When I changed the tunnel plate, my Snickers bars quit melting.

Exactly. And drinks in the cup holder stay colder longer.

In addition, if you have headers it will help. It seems that moving the catalytic convertors under the car helps move the heat better than the default location up against the firewall.

For extremes, LG motorsports has a foil type material that blocks even more. I think it is on their website ($$$).

But the Elite plate and headers made a very significant difference for me. Even over 550+ RWHP, the console is still cooler now than when the engine was still stock.....

Ours is stock:

Cupholder doubles as a fondue pot
Chocolate bars + graham crackers + marshmallows, placed in console = S'mores

Just put your lunch in the console and the Vette will keep it warm for you.

Elite Engineering's ceramic-coated tunnel plate with 'thermal abs' makes a significant difference.

It's relatively easy to install and not too expensive.

And there are a couple of Forum Vendors offering insulating kits (similar to Dynamat) that install under the carpet/console/etc. that also reduce the noise inside the car.

Use heat wrap to wrap the exhaust in that area, start a little before and end the wrap a little after, hell due to keeping the heat inside the exhaust you may even pick up some hp too; due to faster exhaust flow and if you don't like it, it's easy to remove and I'm sure you will also save some $$$$$. OH, and you don't have to remove the exhaust like you would to install a "heavier" tunnel plate.

You have to remove it to wrap it anyway, well, at least it would make the wrapping job a helluva lot easier!

Can anyone comment on if/how much a difference in console heat is made with coated headers back to the exhaust?? I'd think coating would keep more heat in the pipes, but does anyone have experience they could share?

Also, has anyone with Z51 installed the tunnel plate? The Z51 ride is already pretty stiff, especially with the runflats. Does the tunnel plate make it even stiffer?

Thanks in advance!

Ditto, it is a lot easier off the car for sure! and that is the way I would do it.

However it can be done without removing the exhaust if you wanted to but it would be a PITA for most people including me.

PS: We a talking 6 bolts total in most cases to remove the exhaust pipe, 4 in front and 2 in the rear. If the exhaust pipe is a little rusty you can spray it with some 2000 degree silver header paint (Advance Auto Parts) while you have it out so it looks all pretty!!! also check your tunnel plate bolts while your under there I had some loose ones on my 2010 which could cause creaks, torque to 89 "inch pounds" from what I have read.

The Elite plate installed on my 06 Z51 had no effect on ride stiffness. It improves torsional stiffness, which in some cases will eliminate creaks etc. The really big change is in the heat reduction

I put an insulation kit in my 08. The 11 GS Vert dosen't have any leg warmers and the drinks stay relatively cold. Center console got hot so I spent $20 at Top Flight Reproductions for their insulator which works fantastic.

I ordered the Elite insulated model from Corvettes of Houston. Great price and service. My 08 vert is at the dealer with the torque tube dropped for repair. Seemed like a good time for the install since I wont have to do it!
