Default Question on KOOKS Install

I just installed a set of KOOKS headers with an x pipe & cats...the size is 1 3/4 when I tightened the 4 bolts that clamp the collector to the X pipe I had a VERY BAD exhaust leak.. I cant tighten the clamps any more because the bolts are not threaded up far enough to "squeeze" the collector around the X pipe...

I'm thinking the KOOKS used the same length bolts for the 1 3/4 and the 1 7/8 systems.. The shop had a shorter bolt (only one) and it really helped on the side where I used it.. I went out today and bought 4 Stainless bolts that are 1/2" shorter and will put them on tomorrow .. I'm hoping that will cure my exhaust leak...

Anyone hear of the happening before.. I should give KOOKS a call and ask if they use the same length bolts on both size systems...

Yes! Same deal here. I used shorter bolts and also used a higher grade. I thought it was odd, but it could be placement as far as clocking the clamp. I'm ****, and mine are tucked tight and hidden. I FYI also ran 1-7:8" to 3" catless X with B&B 3" Z06 bullets. Can you say LOUD. But sooo badass!

I'm sorry you didn't get the right hardware from Kooks.

I would have just used a spacer on the bolt, but still definitely give Kooks a call to inform them. Certainly not worth waiting to get them to send you new bolts/nuts, but good to inform them that they shipped the kit with the wrong stuff.

ohh...btw...if your pass. side header isn't coated or wrapped, you might want to think about doing that. my uncoated kooks header killed a starter (well melted the solenoid and caused starting/charging issues) in only a few months time (and only a few thousand miles)

Thanks I'll give them a call, but the headers are already in /on the car, so I went to the hardware store and bought 4 shorter bolts (stainless).. $1.69 EACH

Yeah, that's what I'm saying...I would've just used spacers on the bolts they gave you instead of buying new bolts (assuming you had something to use as a spacer).

Glad you got them on though. You'll love it

sent you a PM

Also do you recommend me putting any type of "heat shield" around either the starter, or around the header itself (right around the collector) to try and protect the starter from header heat?

Tkx..
