Default 3.42 Ring & Pinion Question

Can the 3.42 ring and pinion from a C6 manual diff be used in a C6 auto diff?

I don't believe so, at least not in the 2006 and up automatic diffs as far as I know.
The aftermarket does make 3.42 ring & pinions for the A6/6L80 cars though.

I think there are 2 sizes of carriers, one for the 2.56/2.73/3.15 and a larger carrier for the 3.42. The larger diameter gears from the 3.42 won't fit in the smaller carrier.

That may be true but mentioning that 3.15 could cause some confusion as 2005s were different from 2006s and up.
There was a 2.73 and a 3.15 geared automatic in 2005 but the carrier/case for that model year was of course different than later models (be it a manual or automatic).
2006 and 2007 automatics only came with 2.56 gears as well as standard in (non Z51/non Grand Sport) 2008s and up with the added availability of a 2.73 gear as an option as well.
Now, the 2.73s in the 2005s are not to be confused with the 2.73s in the 2008s and up although the actual ring & pinion themselves might still be interchangeable there (but don't quote me).
Also, in C5s at least, the 3.15 geared automatics did share the same carrier/case with the manual (3.42 gears, as all manual cars came/come with) cars so that might also apply to the 2005s.

Yes.
There are ways to adapt/fabricate a C6 Z06 rear to fit almost any C5/C6 but with the 2006 and up automatics in particular it is a bit easier than in the others.

I spoke with DTE today and was told that if the automatic came with a 3.15 from the factory then the 3.42 from my C6 DTE Stage 4 diff could be used. Seems to line up with what you are saying. Just trying to see what kind of market is out there for a 3.42 ring and pinion that has been cryoed, micro polished, shot pined and then removed after the 400 mile break in.

Ive been looking into this, and it seems that the kit (from Zip) for swapping the z06 diff, is just a kit to eliminate the diff cooler. Is it because the cooler doesnt fit or because some people are enough to eliminate a useful feature like a differential cooler?
