Reversed into garage last night and did my usual shut down process by leaving in reverse, e-brake, off switch. Car says to me "shift to reverse."?
Try over and over but it will not accept it is in reverse. Suspecting it is simply the reverse switch I disconnect battery so that it won't drain over night.
Problem now is that the car will not start and I have a check engine light on. I have jacked up and been underneath, both the reverse switches are operating as should (checked for resistance whilst good lady moved shifter). Also checked that 12v is being supplied to the switches (it is).
My laptop (ebay) code reader will not detect any codes (sensor data present) which is frustrating but more so is that the car is now a garage ornament until I get a lead on this one.
Obviously it's a 2005 MN6 and I am fully aware of how to shut it down normally as I have done it a thousand times. Also it is not DBS as the battery is very strong and there are no other faults/symptoms. Somehow, for whatever reason the "i'm in reverse" signal is not getting to wherever is should be getting.
Interestingly the back up lamps won't illuminate either. Please help out a brother who is needing this to work again soon as it's my DD!!!
Got an '05 mn6 myself and on rare occasions it does the same thing. I usually have to walk away/come back/put the fob in the slot/make sure the steering column lock activates (by turning the wheel)/etc/etc/etc. But always look for the flashing red light as you walk away.
I would unhook/rehook the batt and start trying the above...just sayin...
My 2005 MN6 has just started doing this after a few weeks in the garage. I know the battery is weak. Once recharged and having driven the car throughout the day, no recurrence of the power-down failure to recognise "Shift to Reverse". I'll confirm that the problem is completely fixed by a new battery - can't source a Delco 86-6yr in the UK though so need to find an alternative.
Mine turned out to be one of the switches anyway. Although they gave continuity as should and 12v supply to both was good one of the switches was actually internally grounding.
The way the two are wired up is ridiculous as if a fault like this occurs it allows both (reverse lamp and SCL signal) to ground, thus two circuits fail not just one. Therefore there is in fact no redundancy provided by the dual switch set up.
If it does end up being switch related drop me a pm as I found a supplier that has them readily in stock at well less than half price. Additionally, if you don't mind chopping the harness you could use a C5 switch, these can be had for less than 20 bucks. It is easy to put in a bypass switch also if you were stranded waiting for parts like I was.

Hate to reply to an old thread, but I've got the same problem as legal alien listed at the start of this thread... I've never replaced a switch like this, and am looking for pointers.
