Default Oil consumption

Greetings all.....

I'm almost at 3,000 miles since my last oil change and today my low oil light came on. After checking it I'm a over a qt. low. It's 2007 with 13,000 miles on it and I have never lost this much oil in such a short time/distance with any other vehicle. The car had not been tracked though I do get on it once in awhile. Anybody else have any oil consumption issues ? I saw an old thread from 2005 where some were having this problem..

Are you sure it was properly filled at the last oil change. No external leaks. Any mods to the intake or valve covers?

Run another [accurate] engine oil consumption test to verify. As long as the oil consumption is less than 1 quart per 2,000 miles, it is normal, as per GM.

Did you do the last oil change or have a shop do it?

If driven at high RPM a qt every 3K mileage I'd say is not abnormal.

I concur w/ above as I recall GM states a qt ever 1000 (or 2000) is acceptable...FWIW.

+1 on whether last oil change was correctly filled.

Also, parking on a slight tilt (left-right or front-rear) can easily change the reading by 1/2 qt.

Hello,

If an engine isn't broke in correctly per GM recommendations you can have premature wear on the oils rings and compression rings.

Your options are to live with it or have the engine re-ringed.

Thanks for all the replies and input. I did the last oil change and checked then rechecked to ensure everything was right. It's likely due to the higher rpm's I sometimes run at..I just changed the oil today and will keep a closer tab on it..

VetteTrpr,
This isn't abnormally high by any means. Especially if you drive at higher RPM's. Keep us informed.

Unless you buy a crate engine, that is HIGHLY unlikely.

The engine in your car is basically broken in when you buy it.

FloydSummerOf68,
The accepted rate of oil consumption for engines used in the vehicles referenced is 0.946 liter (1 qt) in 3200 km (2000 mi). Important: This rate only applies to personal use vehicles, that are driven in a non-aggressive manner and maintained in accordance with the appropriate maintenance schedule, with less than 58,000 km (36,000 mi), or driven at legal speeds in an unloaded (for trucks) condition. With that being said, 1 quart in 3000 miles isn't abnormally high.

If 1 quart per 2,000 miles is normal and I currently have over 10,000 miles since the last oil change and I've only used 3/8 of a quart, then I must have a major lack of lubrication problem with my car.

Maybe because I drive mine about 25,000/year and the OP is about 2,500/year, that I don't suck oil into my intake manifold?

Almost forgot to add that quite often I reach peak RPM in 3rd gear in about 11 seconds from a stop and have on a few occasions forced a shift into 5th on a stretch exceeding a 1/4 mi. Makes me wonder if a little non-aggressive driving would help increase my oil use.

1 quart every 2000 miles is the accepted norm??

I have never had a car that burned oil like that. I've never even had a car that burned a full quart of oil between oil changes.

1 qt/2k miles may be acceptable, but it certainly isn't typical.

Our LS3 burns about 1 qt/24k miles (of course, I change before that)
Our LS2 burned about 1 qt/18k miles.
Our LS1 was a 2001 with the "new and improved" ring design that lasted only one year, it burned 1 qt/3k miles.
