Default Cam Install Question

I just put my balancer back on (using the old crank bolt) and then put the new bolt in and torqued to 38 ft. lbs. I then went to do the extra 140 degrees and it seemed entirely too easy. I ended up going a little further than 140 degrees (a little over 200). Is this possible? Did I possibly not seat the balancer correctly with the first bolt and now the new bolt is being torqued and trying to pull the balancer on? However, I don't know if this is the issue because the AC belt is lined up perfectly.

Any advice? Should I get a new bolt and try it again or am I safe?

are you sure the balancer was fully seated? How much torque did you install the old crank bolt with?

I torqued it to 200 ft lbs (I read in a few places that this is sufficient). I can't turn it any further now so maybe the first torque measurement (37 ft lbs) was off because it wasn't seated all the way which caused me to easily pass the 140 degree mark.

Did you do that the first time or just now?

200 ft lbs with the first bolt then 37 with the new bolt and then 140 degrees. The 140 degrees just seemed too easy (so I went further), but then again I didn't think it was that tough to get the original bolt off the first time either.

No loctite. I'm thinking I should just remove this bolt and get a new one.

Is it possible the rubber gasket between the end of the crank and the crank pulley was not seated all the way?

End of the crank as in where the crank bolt hole is? What does this gasket look like?

Ya, there should be a rubber gasket that looks like a cap that goes between the crank pulley and the end of the crank.

More than likely you didn't seat the pulley all the way the first time. (very common). Just continue to tighten the new bolt as much as it will go and call it a day. There is no way you are gonna over tighten it doing it by hand.

I don't think that you can overtighten it by hand either, but I'd still remove the bolt and replace with a new one with Loctite. Cheap insurance.

I didn't figure I'd be able to do much damage by hand, but I just wanted to make sure.

Just found out that the local dealership has some in stock. I'm going to pick up another one this evening.
