Check gas cap....now CEL

Check gas cap....now CEL
On my prior gas fillup I got the "check gas cap" message. So, I unscrewed the gas cap, and it didnt feel as if it were loose, then I screwed it back on as tight as I could get it.
The message went away for a day, then I got the same message. Again, the gas cap was on tight.
Then, after my next fill up, the "check gas cap" message is not showing, but the engine light is now showing?
Is it possible that this engine light is now showing because the computer thinks the gas cap is still not on tight?
Any suggestions?

mine wouldn't even tighten up last week and I got the CEL then it was fine again
