Background: battery is operating at 60%. Driving down the rode for about 20 mins, I see smoke coming out from under the hood. Pop the hood and i see pouring smoke coming out of my alternator. I plan to replace both, any idea what could have cause this.
My car is heavily modified, but this is the first of this type of problem. Car has ls2 402 KB 2.6L. I still have belt slip problems i havent worked out yet. car put down 533whp and 7xx wtq down. I know i drive a diesel. Any ideas of what this could be. Thanks
Obviously a bad alternator, possibly caused by the extra tension on the drive pully? Have you increased the belt tension to try and solve your slippage issues? Never heard of an alternator smoking, price of modding I guess.
I agree...never heard of an alternator going up in smoke. On the C-6 as well as the C-5, the alternator charge rate is controlled by the PCM/ECU. On the C-6, there are two fused links going to the starter solenoid where the battery and alternator meet. I would be looking for an electrical short on those lines although I would expect one of the fused links would blow. The alternator itself is probably done and has to be replaced but again, never heard of one smoking before.
