Have a 2011 coupe and am looking at modifying the air intake or the compartment so that it is more or less a cold air intake. I looked through the threads and could not find anything on this.
Has anyone done a mod like this or know if it can be done. I have a few ideas running through my head that would cost alot less than purchasing one.
If you want to get additional "cold" air(a direct flow of air from the car's grille) to the air breather, then look at a Vette-Air scoop. I have one on my Z06, but it caused surging, etc. I had to make a diffuser plate that is mounted on the discharge of the scoop to prevent the forced air from being slammed into the air filter which caused turbulence across the MAF sensor. I now get tons of "cold" air in the form of a curtain of "cold" air surrounding the air cleaner's opening, but not directly hitting the filter element.
The Vette-Air is molded Fiberglas, very well made and installs fairly easily. You do have to cut the shroud and drill four holes in the shroud. I made my diffuser plate from a piece of 1/8" Plexiglas 3.5" X 18" long, with a 18" long piece of vacuum tubing(1/8" ID) slit to seal the front edge of the Plexiglas to the bumper beam. It is held in position using the rear two bolts that secure the Vette-Air scoop.
Agree with JoesC5 above (FOR MAF'S senstitivity to pressure waves and resulting surging) but be very carefull. GM has lot of engineers who spend hours desigining, playing with these sytems on multi million dollar equipment and computers and lot of people do not. It is easy to get in some one way cooler air for one run so one can advertise horspower gains to sell your $495 gizmo, but overall drivabilty could suffer.
