Default GM Hot Cam

Anyone install an LS2/LS3 GM Hot Cam. If so, was it worth it?

Thanks

I think the general consensus is the HOTCAM is very mild compared to most of the cams out there currently and doesnt make near as much power as one would generally be looking for.

IE, I went with a custom grind Pat G cam 231/238 .617/.615 113+2 and made 487/445 at the wheels and the cam is extremely streetable! Search for some results results for the HOTCAM

I'm not sure if this is the OP's intent, but I would be interested even if it only made a "less than stellar" amount of HP, but was more than factory and was covered by warranty since it is a GM product. Is that the case here?

I know the CAM is a mild one but I would suspect it is because it works within GM's specs with the stock heads and no additional tuning. Basically pull the stock one out and replace it with the hot cam and go. No worrying about new rods, springs, rockers and tuning.

GM claims a 50 hp increase but if it takes <10 install time @ $100/hour seems like $30/hp which is not too bad if you are looking for better performance but not being able to beat everyone you encounter.

Do you get any surging or bucking or hard cold starts?

Not covered by the warranty. That part is a GMPP part and its use can invalidate warranty claims.

How do they call it a mild cam and say it gets an extra 50 hp with no tuning? Must be at the flywheel and not the rear wheels.

Thought it was too good to be true!

Funny, GM product but installing it on your GM vehicle voids your GM warranty.

Ive found the bucking/surging to be non-existent pretty much every where in RPM and the one time I felt it, it was hardly noticeable...
No cold hard start issues either.

Thats good, I would have thought to get that high in the rwhp there would be some. Do you have a auto or manual? And would having that same cam inan auto make a difference with surging? Thanks.

Nope, plenty of guys in that HP range and even a little bit more with hardly any driveability issues! I have a manual, so not sure how it would be in an auto, but cant imagine itd be any different?

I'm looking at doing the Hot Cam. Did you dyno before and after?

Did you do it yourself? Any issues?

No I didn't (yet). I was looking at a supporting vendors site and came across the part for $399. Description is 50 FLYWHEEL horsepower increase to 480 from 430 in the LS3.

I don't know how long it takes to install but if $1000 then <$1500 for 50 hp. Sure it isn't the greatest cam but if you want better performance and not needing to beat everyone you encounter this may be a way to go. I know I am looking into it.

50 hp even to the fly has to be tuned or I cant see it getting that much and keeping good driveability or even just good mpg etc. They may have a canned tune they put in too and we just dont know it.

It will void a warranty, and there are vastly superior cams available.
