Battery went almost completely down and only would click the starter when I got in. Got all kinds of strange messages and lights flashing. I charged the battery overnight with a regular battery charger which might have been a mistake. When I put it back in the car and started it, all the weird messages were gone, but I noticed the voltage gauge is right at 14 and the needle only moves up a little when I bring the rpm up to 3k.
I have the ctek charger on it now, but thinking I probably sulfated the heck out of the battery because of the guage reading.
What should the voltage gauge read and do you think the battery is toast? Buy another Delco for it?
it has been said the charging system is on the slightly "small" side incl. batt., altern., etc. That said, one almost complete discharge is not good, but if you religiously (and I do almost mean that) keep that bat. maint. on it, you'll get years more of use out of the batt. If you don't, expect something a lot less.
As to readings, at least for me and others, it's normal to see anywhere fr. 13.5 up to 14.6. Mostly, mine while the car is running stays in the 14.2.-14.5 range. Generally, this isn't the old days of generators and voltage regulators where charging would go way up at higher rpms.
I think you are OK. My fully charged Delco after my battery tender has been on overnight and shows a fully charged light will read about 13.2 volts across the terminals with a multimeter. Your car volt meter will read something higher since it is showing the alternator output. I keep a battery tender on mine most all of the time it's in the garage.
