I have been hearing a screaching sound lately when driving. Noise comes and goes but you can hear it when you apply brakes AND while coasting. Only time I dont hear it is at idle. The shop told me i just need a new set of rear pads. Seem right? This screaching sound sucks.
I have been told I only need need rear pad replacement. Anyone have a set they would reccomend? Don't need any crazy perfomance pads but i do want decent stopping power. Keys for me are quiet and low dust as well.
I went with GM Ceramics a couple of years ago and have been entirely satisfied. No more dust and they are quiet. You can buy a full set from Gene at GMPartsHouse.com for about $150.
If you are only replacing the rear pads I would install the same pads as you have in the front. Mis-matched pads are not the best idea.
Most replace both front and back when changing/upgrading brake pads on a street driven C6.
I prefer to spend a little more for a quality break pad. For the street Carbotech bobcats work awesome, create minimum dust and are easy on rotor wear.
thanks guys. I guess I just always figured it was probably better to go after market assuming gm parts are more expensive and not always as good quality.
If you just replace the pads with the same brand and compound that is already on the car there really isn't a need to turn the rotor unless it is damaged. If you turn the rotor it will take a little while for the new pads to build up the transfer layer to the same point it was before the rotor was turned.
Dealer price for the pads can be more expensive than if you get the from one of the forum vendors that sell GM Parts. The correct GM pad replacement kit will come with new pads and new caliper hardware (abutment plates and pad retaining spring and new caliper guide pin bolts). If you go with aftermarket pads you wil have to resuse the old hardware or buy it. That is one of the reasons for the price differential between GM and aftermarket replacement pad kits.
Does $225 seem like a fair price? Should I ask them to leave the rotors alone unless they can show me how they are damaged? At this point, seems like I just go with the OEM part.
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread... since my '05 base just started squealing like a pig. Every time I touch the pedal I hear it from both ends of the car. Pads have plenty of life left in them though, so I'm not sure why they are squealing so bad.

Thanks to all!
When did you change the fronts? as most of the braking is done on the front of these cars.
car has 63k and im not sure when both fronts and rears were changed. According to the tech at the dealer, my fronts were fine. I guess I just don't understand why i would hear this noise when im not on the brake? dealer said it does that to warn you that its time to change.....seems odd? Also, it looks like brake pads are around $110 or $120 o gm parts house. That is for one pad or a set?
Sorry for all the questions. I called another deal today to ask what they would charge for rear brake replacement and they said $430...I have no clue what a fair price is at this pt. Thoughts?

If you push harder on the pedal when you are making a sudden stop do the brakes squeal or do they squeal when you are easily pulling up to a stop sign or traffic light? If they don't squeal when you are pushing the pedal harder then drive deeper and stop harder at planned stops to get rid of the squeal.
Right rear aftermarket pad on my Z06 squeals like a stuck pig if I just breathe my foot across the brake pedal but if I drive at speed 20 or 30 ft closer and then hit the brake there is no squeal.
The OP is getting squeal when his foot isn't on the brake which is an indication the pad wear sensors are touching the rotor.

Thanks again all
If you were here in Orlando, I would do them for free. $430 is plain BS just for the rear, hell its only 30 minutes of work.

My noise is definitely dependent on pedal effort. I can make the noise go away by changing how I press on the pedal... but in my opinion, I shouldn't have to do that. The brakes are not supposed to squeal.
i went ahead and bought the pads from GM Parts house. Gene sent them immediately and I am hoping to have them installed tomorrow. My dealer told me their cost was around 180 per pad, i got both for $95 from Gene. Dealers are thieves. I guess I'll just go to a local shop for the work. I was told to machine the rotors for the new pads so i have a clean surface. Thoughts on pad install pricing with the rotor work?
Finally got everything done. Spent $105 on brake pads from GM Parts House (Gene shipped them out instantly) then spent additional $118 for install and machine rotors. $223 total for the rears.....way better than $430 from the stupid dealers

I was searching for typical brake pad life and found this thread. That price doesn't sound too bad, especially to get rid of any squealing.
