I'm surprised no one has mentioned Red Line trans fluid. I've always heard (read) their D4 fluid works great.
I use it in my 2008 and it helped with cold weather notichiness. I've seen a few others post similar cold weather improvement with the D4 in the TR6060 too. However, the OP is asking about the T-56 so some Redline users have sat on the sidelines.

That's the #1 improvement when switching to fully synthetic fluid. Having said that, Redline recommended their MTL for my T56, but wonder what's different on the TR6060 to warrant D4 ATF??? Maybe MTL shouldn't be used on the T56, and that's why I experienced rapid deterioration when I used it; tranny felt like stock again after a few thousand miles. I used RP Synchromax after that, and also felt great initially, but sold the car before I could find out if it fared any better than Redline in the long run.
Anyway, I'd call Redline and ask specifically what they recommend, and report back to us .
Does anyone have a favorable report on a trans fluid that makes the T56 shift smoother? I know 70% of the T56's are notchy but I recall someone saying the fluid made a big difference in a post and a bunch of others chimed in to echo his praises.
Mine shifts fine but sometimes you have to wiggle to get into reverse if its sitting still. I'm told it does this because some shaft is spinning the opposite direction and going to 6th first slows it down. I'm not a trans guy so.......
Cartek went through my transmission 8k miles ago and said it looked brand new inside. I still had them put in all the goodies (carbon fiber sychs and billet shift forks ect, and it still did it. I did a search and its common.
I used the royal Purple Synchromax for 3 or 4 years. I found it better than the original fill. I was due for a change and decided to try the Red Line ATF D4 [ it has the dexron III rating ] . It shifts better with the red line when cold. It shifts better with the RP when its fully warmed up. I might try mixing the two.
I wonder why I haven't read of anyone trying Royal Purple Max ATF Transmission Fluid?
Here is the product description:
Max ATF is a synthetic, high performance, long life, multipurpose, automatic transmission fluid. Max ATF significantly reduces heat to extend the life of your transmission and is recommended for all automatic transmissions requiring Ford Mercon® or GM Dexron® III transmission fluids. Max ATF is a synthetic, high performance, long life, multipurpose transmission fluid. Max ATF is recommended for all automatic transmissions requiring Ford Merco or GM Dexron III transmission fluids. Max ATF is more oxidation stable than other transmission fluids and greatly resists breakdown from heat and loss of proper lubricity.
I really want to try the Redline but it doesn't exist locally in St. Louis? My buddy asked if I wanted to use his lift today so I can change out all my fluids, engine, transmission & rear end so I was trying to take advantage..
More than likely I will just order 4 quarts of Redline ATF D4 in hopes I can get the same offer next weekend.
I used Redline D4 ATF in my 01Z and AMSOIL ATF in my 06Z. I didn't see any real improvement in shifting. No great loss because I was changing the fluid for the first time at 20k+ miles to get full synthetic in there. If you are making the fluid change solely to obtain shifting improvement, you may be disappointed IMHO. Your results may vary.
