Anyone have any experience replacing harmonic balancer? I see them listed on various sites. Hard for shade tree mechanic to replace? What is cost for dealer to do? Have done this repair on other cars before.
Have seen them on ebay, various auto parts web sites. You've googled no doubt. Surprisingly, did not see them listed for sale on Corvette specialty catalogs.

Just had mine done last week at the dealership. I went over in process and was very glad a technician was working on it. Looked very complex ... plus under warranty so why try to do it yourself?
As to availability ... the dealership had to have it shipped overnight b/c there were very few left and they didn't want to take a chance that someone else might get it before me !!! Work equivalent was 5 hours labor, if I remember correctly.
After all these years, why hasn't GM done something to recall and correct these problems ? This has been going on for HOW many years now with how many cars ???
There is NO WAY I would put another GM balancer back on the car.

Exactly! I forsee a lot of folks paying out of pocket once the warrantys start ending.
Mine came off 4 times within a couple months all fixed under warranty.. finally it fell off again and I pulled the motor and turned it into a 402. The cam bolts had actually backed out and the timing cover was the only thing holding them in... all of this happened within 20k miles. Good luck with your balancer and if it does it again, crank pin it.
Thanks Gene.
As it turns out there are plenty of them. According to the dealership, GM won't let them use any of them because they are all a few years old and are probably still problematic. I am now waiting for the company who makes them for GM to manufacture one to send it to the dealer for the warranty repair.

Good luck.
GM manual says 3 hours simple job, not complicated at all if you can get under the car, tell the shop you want two hours labor back, my 06 I'm replacing with a Powerbond 1117-SS
As I said, there are plenty available. The problem is, GM wont let the dealership install them because they have been sitting on the shelf for three or four years and those units are still problematic so GM is having one maufactured for me.

Sorry to say, but this is not true. The balancers have changed part numbers for various reasons since inception... so the current part number would be the latest. They're not going to build this part number any different today then they would have a year ago. Sorry, but I guarantee you they aren't waiting for GM to make another one. I have heard a lot of stories, but this one is really funny lol. Not making fun of YOU, but your dealership has lost it.
What years or engines are having these problems and what are the symptoms?
My 07 had the wobbles at about 40,000 miles on it, so I had an ATI unit installed. Now with over 130,000 miles on the car, I have had zero problems with it. After market is the way to go IMO.
I can't believe that this has been a problem for so long.
It was a problem with the C5's and still happens on the C6's. It sounds like the stock GM ones are junk. Go with the aftermarket. I used a Powerbond one on my C5. It was the cheapest one that I found, and still it outperforms the GM one without wobble.
Why doesn't GM do something about it and get a good balancer?
