Default Oil leak

The other day I was leaving in the Vette and noticed a pencil eraser size oil spot on the garage floor. I was headed out to get oil and filter for an oil change so I figured when I was under there I would check to see where the oil was leaking from. I had called the dealership to get the car in to have it checked but my warrenty ran out 15 days ago and they wouldnt even help me out. Tipical. Anyways, while doing the oil change I noticed the complete bottom of the oil pan from front to back was wet. Basically I believe its coming from the front cover seal behind the balancer.

I want to fix this ASAP so heres my question. What parts need to be removed to get the balancer off so i can get to the seal. Whats the possibility I can get the seal out without taking the front cover off? I noticed the steering rack was close to the balancer. Does the rack have to come completely out? BTW, 2007 c6 LS2 with 7,4xx miles. I think the seal is leaking because it doesnt get driven much, but Im looking to change that!

First I would be absolutely certain the front engine seal is leaking rather than something more simple to repair. If unsure, get a dye kit and verify.

If you are certain it's the front seal (and be thankfull it's not the rear seal) it's a time consuming job. Not extremely difficult...about a 5-6 on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being highest.

Look-up/search cam removal and you can see what is required to remove the front cover.

Basically, to get access to the cover/seal (yes the cover HAS to come off to R&R the seal) you have to move the rack out of the way by sliding it over and partways through the passenger wheel well.

To get access to the rack, pull ballancer and cover you need to yank the power steering pump hard lines, water pump, alternator, radiator, intake.
Not sure if I'm leaving anything out trying to think off the top of my head.

There's a few good write-ups that someone will chime in and post tHe links hopefully.

My oil pan looked as you describe also. Leak @ front migrating rearward along bottom of pan. Mine was the oil pan gasket. 2008 LS3.
