Anybody have a threaded insert install tool I can borrow?
Need to install two 5/16-18 threaded inserts (rivet nuts) in my frame for the dry sump tank install. I don't really feel like buying a $100+ tool to use for 5 min and then have it sit in a drawer and collect dust.
Looking for any of you who may have the tool and 3 or 4 5/16-18 (5/16-11 will also work) inserts to ship to me on my dime and I will ship back within a day. I can also leave a deposit with you if needed.
Oh come on. Buy one. He who dies with the most tools wins. I am running with the leaders. I have tools from the 60s and 70s for cars and motorcycles I don't even remember what they are for.

In general, I agree with you. In this case, I really don't see the need since I will probably never use it again...
I have the tool I'll check to see if I have an 5/16 thread serts
Thanks. If you don't have the inserts, no biggie. Just let me know which ones to buy and I will pick up a pack of them and return whatever I don't use back to you.
I had the dealer install the inserts into my lower radiator bracket. They charged about 29 bucks for the 2 inserts and install.
I wish I had that option, but the car is not driveable with the motor install not complete yet. I need something to install in my garage and I doubt the dealer will let me borrow the tool and sell the inserts individually.

Cool. I've racked my brain trying to figure out where the other inserts are. I have dismantled a dozen or so C6's and the only insert i was familiar with was on the radiator bracket.
There are 4 in the area I need them that were for the ECU mounts, but they are about an inch too far over. The oil lines interfere with the headers if I try to use these existing inserts. I need to put 2 more about an inch inward to give adequate clearance between headers and oil lines.
Shipping back and forth is more than buying the tool at harbor freight.
Also, you can install them with a bolt and nut. You screw the nut onto the bolt, then screw it into the insert with a washer between the nut and insert and as you turn the nut, but not the bolt, it pulls the insert up.
Trust me it works i did it a bunch of times before I got the tool.
Glad you could solve your problem thanks to a generous forum member .
Hey, could you post pictures when you're done? Curious what those 'inserts' look like. Are they like a big rivet with theads inside?
Sent the guy a PM to try to work out the details.
Yes, the inserts look like a rivet with threads on the inside. The insert is flanged and fits thru a drilled hole and the tool cinched the backside up to squeeze the parent metal.
The Corvette gods are looking out for me today, assuming I can borrow the tool.

You know, I didn't even think of that! My cheap a$$ should have figured that out since I just made a similar tool for Justinjor to bend his steering rack ears back out...

I had a friend show me this trick when I installed a lower rad support.
I assume you're needing a nut on the blind side of a panel. If you're handy with a file, you can make your hole square and use cage nuts. Another option would be using a nutplate slid through an elongated hole and attached with pop rivets. There's more than one way to skin this cat.
Thanks for all the ideas guys. I ordered a few nut rivets last night and will use the nut/washer/bolt trick to install them. If that doesn't work, you guys have given me plenty of backup plans.
These nut rivets only need to hold the weight of the dry sump oil tank plus oil - maybe 30-35 lbs full. Its the vibration that could lead to issues down the road. Thats why I'm looking for something semi-permanent.
