Since my last track day 2 weeks ago, I developed a power steering leak. I thought it was coming from the pump, but cleaned it off tonight to try to pinpoint it. This is what I found.
The pump and lines are all nice and dry, so I am lucky there. However, this is what I found. On the rack itself right below the power steering pump, where the column meets the rack and forms the T, there is a small plastic plug (about 1/4 inch diameter) on bottom where an orange and black wire go in. The fluid is seeping out around this plastic plug and at a pretty decent rate.
First, any idea what this plug/wires are for? I am guessing some type of sensor. Next question is how to fix this? The plug seems tight. My only thought is some type of epoxy around it.
Any suggestions or assistance would be appreciated.
I talked to a friend who is a GM mechanic about it. We put it up on the lift and he confirmed it was coming from the plug. He said he has never seen anything like it before. The plug is for the steering sensor that adjusts the steering based on speed. It is a permanent part of the rack and can't be tightened, replaced, or anything. So instead of replacing the rack, he tried a GM caulk he said they use for all the "stubborn" problems. It worked well. I still have a drip every now and then, but hardly anything. I can live with it now and it didn't cost me a fortune. If it doesn't hold up, he said they havesomething even stronger.
