Does the 2010+ GS dry sump oil tank have that afterthought tank thingy on the side???

You can select the year and then select the car/model and you will get a pdf.

No extra tank on the side but I was told this was a 2012 grand sport motor and dry sump tank. The tank does not have the black upper either, it is all aluminum.
As soon as I get the car cranked over a few times I will be able to tell how much more can oil will fit. Until then, I may be left wondering.
Can others confirm that ONLY tanks with the piggy back setup are 10.5 qt capacity and GM made no changes to merge the two tanks into one larger tank?

Long story short, you should get the new design, which is a must for you in my opinion since you track your car. Moreover, the fact that oil coolers are empty should not make a difference for how much you initially fill since 10.5 quarts does not fill the oil coolers (you don't change the oil in the coolers; they get changed by circulation after the oil change).

I now have an email in to the vendor I bought it from, waiting to hear back. We agreed to the complete motor from his personal 2012 Grand Sport. Doesn't look like that is the case
I will keep everyone updated after discussions with the seller.

Damn Sean. I hope they didn't screw you or something cause that's just bogus. . . if that's the case then you have a whole new can of worms on your plate. I'm surprised you aren't naming the vendor here, but anyone with a search button can look through your other threads and see from whom you purchased.

Isn't the oil tank with the 'tumor' attached to it the old one??? My 2012 GS doesn't seem to have any 'funnel shaped' appendage. As mentioned, I can't see the part of the tank facing the fender, but I doubt there's any space for anything there. My tank seems to be a simple cylindrical shaped one, which you apparently have too. Just post a picture and we can immediately tell you if it's the same or not. I don't remember the old one (with the tumor) having the 1/3 upper part black, like ours. That should be a dead giveaway. Don't blame your vendor man; looks to me you got what he promised. Post a pic and stop the speculation .

I'm not blaming anyone yet. The vendor deserves a chance for explanation first.
I will post a pic in the morning when I get home.

I want to be very clear here - I'm not blaming or flaming on anybody. I'm having trouble determining which tank that I have and to make sure I installed the correct oil tank on my car for the track. Until I discuss with the vendor, nobody is at fault and nobody is lying. This could be as simple as me not being able to understand what I'm looking at.
I will post a pic of what came out of the crate first thing in the morning. After that, please feel free to help me confirm which tank I have to support or refute my concerns.

Black top, attached to another black plastic piece about 1/3rd of the length, then aluminum below that. I stuck my head as deep as possible with a flashlight, and I see something that might be sticking out towards the rear of the car (triangular in shape when viewed from the top), but seems like part of the tank, not an appendage, like the old tank. When OP posts a pic, he'll have an answer in a minute .

You can very clearly see the lack of attachment that is displayed on the ZR1 cutaway vs the tank in the pics. Right next to the sensor should be the plug-in for the piggy back and it's not there. . .

Not only that. The top 1/3 (above the bolts) is plastic, not metal. And I definitely see a protrusion in mine, and this one has none. And my car is a relatively early 2012, with Sep 15, 2011 build date. Seems like that phone call is in order OP . Man, I HATE when that happens. Now maybe the engine has twice the mileage OP was told . You can't trust seller now. Good luck OP, and sorry for the bad news man.

That's exactly what i was thinking. The motor is supposed to be a <5k mileage 2012 grand sport motor. Sure, it's really clean in the pictures, but degreaser does wonders and I'm always skeptical of things that are too good to be true. . .

But yes, I'd definitely check the engine's year with the serial number. The good news is there hasn't been any engine updates as far as I know, but many times we never find out, so the newer obviously the better. Curious how the saga ends.

The fact that yours is a 2012 GS and you have the ZR1 style oil tank is enough to convince me. From what I've read, the Grand sports(released in 2010) only had the new style tank so the fact that this tank is not that one is..alarming to say the least.

I bought a 2012 GS motor with 1600 miles on it (or less) when it came out. Motor had zero dirt or oil on it, tank was just a bit more grimy. I figured it was from it's proximity to the wheel.
Either way, I'm waiting until I speak with the vendor, an extremely well known company here on the forum, to make ANY decisions or opinions. It could be an honest mistake of the worker bee throwing the wrong tank in there. This company has been helpful thru the duration of the project even though there were some minor snags along the way. No need to get into that right now until I hear the other side of the story.
Trying to stay positive here, but it will suck to have to do rework. I was hoping to have the car running this week.
Stay tuned...

If the GS has had the same tank since it came out, then it's pretty obvious the tank was swapped on purpose. And it's alarming indeed. The next piece of the puzzle is to determine what year the engine is. And the last piece of the puzzle, MILEAGE, will probably never be answered. Hope he got a good deal .
