I've heard of this, but, have no idea what it is or how to do it. I changed coolants on all my other "older' vehicles and never did this. My Vette is coming up on 5 yrs and I want to change the coolant by myself. Any help would be appreciated.
When you drain and refill the coolant, air bubbles can get stuck in the pump or heads leading to overheating during the first few minutes of driving. One method that I have used is manually burping the heads. To do this, fill the reservoir, put the cap back on and flip the overfill tube straight up in the air. Then pull the hose that goes from the coolant crossover tube to the hose that runs parallel to the radiator. Put a small catch under the open hole at the coolant crossover tube. Plug the hose you just removed from the crossover tube with your thumb and blow into the reservoir overflow tube. You will see and feel water being pushed out of the crossover pipe. Keep blowing until you get a solid stream of fluid, doesn't take very long.
If the overflow pipe isn't air tight (it's a ribbed piece of plastic), remove and use a length of hose that fits, 3/8' fuel line fits if I remember correctly.
Also forgot to add that I've had much better luck with getting more coolant out. And the burping process with the front end going down hill in my driveway than with the front end going up hill.
Thank you, gentlemen! I figured burping was a way to get air out, but, just didn't know the procedures. I've never done this before on my Vette, other vehicles, yes. Just not my Vette.
