Default Transmission problems

Hi all,
This may have been covered in the past but so sorry if it's a repeat question.
Have a problem with my 05, C6 manual transmission. I'm getting "locked out" When shifting down from 3rd to 2nd, when i do get into second it pops out and grinds, (feels like the 1-4 lockout when changing up) Took it to the dealer, said the 2nd gear synchro, block ring etc, (mentioned a lot of other stuff that means nothing to me) needs to be replaced cost of around $4k,
Does this sound about right?

I've only had the car since Dec, have a feeling the previous owner didn't know how to drive a stick as it also needs new clutch and flywheel already.

Does anyone have any good vette mechanics in the Sunnyvale/Mountain view CA area other than dealerships i could get it checked out by?

Thanks in advance.

Kev

Got a recommendation for Corvette Express in Vacaville. Bit of a drive, but if you can make it, they might be worthwhile. Guy named James recommended them highly - he's got a C4 and a C6 he takes to them.

So far I haven't needed anything I couldn't handle, but might give them a try. Motorsport Image in Roseville is good, too. I've been in there a couple of times, and they do good work. But that's really too long a haul.

You'll probably get a referral in the South Bay, but those are two I know of.

Have you tried adjusting the shifter? This can be done by just removing the shift boot cover. Only takes a few minutes, and it might help your problem - certainly can't make it any worse.

If the transmission only has the issue with going into 2nd gear, the problem most likely is in the trans. $4K from the dealer is about right for installing a new transmission. Let us know if we can help if you choose to rebuild your transmission.
