Default Another LS7 "ticking" problem. Need some educated opinions.

VIDEO ADDED

First off, yes, I did search, and yes I learned a ton about this issue. And I know it's not as bad of a widespread panic as some are lead to believe but riddle me this.

Just bought a 2007 Z06. Build date is 04/07 car has 24,xxx miles. BONE STOCK. Got the car, drove it conservatively for the first few days and then did 2 or 3 WOT pulls to get a feel for the power.

The car pulled great and of course I was very impressed. Continued to drive conservatively for the next couple days and then I noticed the "ticking." Also, at higher RPM and WOT I'm now noticing that the car isn't accelerating as hard and it kind of bucks a little bit. Not violently but enough to noticed that it's not accelerating smoothly.

So my question is this. I know that an exhaust leak can sometimes be confused with a noisy valve train and that might be the tick I'm hearing now. BUT is it possible that an exhaust leak can lead to loss of power and choppy acceleration at higher rpm?

I'm hoping that the issue is just a simple fix like an exhaust leak.
If not, I'm under warranty and can have the motor replaced.

My second question is this.

Has anyone had a LS7 motor replaced from a GM dealer? I'll be happy that it's a new motor but of course I'm a little unsure how good of a job the techs can do at the dealer since I'm used to going to specialty shops that always take pride in their work. I'll be more than pleased with a new motor but I want it done right.

Please fill out a little more of your profile, sometimes it helps to know what city you live in to share which Chevrolet dealership or specialty performance shop would be recommended.

Do you have a check engine light?

Does the car crank longer to start?

Is it idling smooth or rough?

Others will chime in with some great help, I hope it is nothing to serious.

Thanks. Information is filled out

No, there is not a check engine light

No, the car starts normally.

And the idle is smooth from what I can tell. I mean, the car jiggles a little bit while idling but isnt that just the nature of a huge 7.0L? RPM-wise the idle is smooth.

Gengras Chevrolet is the dealer that I'll be dealing with.

I think it's a lifter noise. Ours has done it since day one.

Good luck with that! I had a "tick" (lifters) in a C5, which went away when I switched to Amsoil 0-30W oil.

You should post a video, to see how pronounced your 'tick' is. As you said, it's pretty normal for LS engines, so forget getting a new motor unless something is seriously wrong. If valvetrain related, you'd get those parts replaced. Please keep us posted.

As far as the issue while accellerating (and possibly the tick you hear) check to see if you have a bad/fouled/cracked spark plug or a bad plug wire or spark plug wire that isn't connected completely. The oem spark plug wires are of low quality (junk).

yea I know it sounds pretty fierce in the video, but in real life it doesnt sound nearly as horrific. I'm guessing its the microphone on my iphone that exaggerated the sound because you almost have to listen for it in real life, but it is still pretty noticeable once you do start listening for it.

I'm in the same boat as you are, just a lil further down the stream...I had cam bolts backing out and when that got fixed the damage was already done..bout a week later after the cam bolts were fixed i started getting a tick, that turned into a click, that turned into a horrid knock..just bout all the lifters are trashed..cam is trashed.metal shavings in the oil pan.and still have a lifter stuck in the bore..motor has to come out and get rebuilt....
my advice would be to stop running it and get it torn apart asap..Lucky that you have warranty though..

Does not sound good. I would tow it to a dealer if it is under warrenty and have them look at it. Don't know what you oil temp was in the video but it seemed low (35 psi) at idle.......

yea its at the dealer now. They gave me a call this morning and said that they ordered new lifters for me. What should oil pressure be around idle?

No, they didnt specify. I'm not even positive that they looked inside the heads at all. I think they're guessing that it's the lifters because all the guy said was that they "ordered" new lifters. If there is any other damage I'm sure they'll see it when they open it up to replace the lifters that they ordered. Do the heads need to come off in order to replace the lifters or is it something that can be done by having the valve covers off?
