However, I've had my instrument cluster out several times for different reasons, and I still find it difficult to get that wire harness connector unclipped from the HUD button pod. I find it much easier to use a stubby philips head screwdriver to remove the 3 screws that hold the button pod in the trim bezel, then you can easily see the connector to release it.
You still have to remove the interior light connector by feel, but that's easy.
When reinstalling, just screw the pod back in, then when you're ready it's very easy to plug the connector back in by feel.
Here's a picture of doing a similar thing on the right side, which you won't need to remove when installing the Column Lock Eliminator, but it shows the location of the 3 screws:
