Default Steering Column Lock Module - DIY? 2005

I need to replace the dreaded Steering column lock control module. (unlike most people, mine is intermittantly recognizing the gear is in reverse to park) It seems easy to replace, pulling the dash bezel. Is it plug and play, or will the master computer give me errors? anybody with advise?

HERES THE VIDEO, BUT IF I REMEBER CORRECTLY THE SHIFT TO REVESE STUFF IS ACTUALLY CONTROL IN THE DOOR LOCK RECVEIVER MODULE ABOVE THE RADIO BEHIND THE CENTER CONSOLE

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umBo8Q3PF6A

IF YOUR TEARING THE DASH APART NOW IS A GOOD TIME TO INSTALL THE COLUMN LOCK ELIMINATOR.

I've got a call into Corvette' of Houston on that part. wanted to make sure It would also solve the shift to reverse issue as well. i figured if I had everything apart I'd also replace the defective part, but don't want a whole can of worms if it has to be ECM flashed or some such nonsense. Dealer confirmed it's the "steering column lock control Module" as the problem with the matching part number.

I installed one recently in my old 2005 when I went to visit my sister and her husband, who owns it now. It's really very easy.

However, I've had my instrument cluster out several times for different reasons, and I still find it difficult to get that wire harness connector unclipped from the HUD button pod. I find it much easier to use a stubby philips head screwdriver to remove the 3 screws that hold the button pod in the trim bezel, then you can easily see the connector to release it.

You still have to remove the interior light connector by feel, but that's easy.

When reinstalling, just screw the pod back in, then when you're ready it's very easy to plug the connector back in by feel.

Here's a picture of doing a similar thing on the right side, which you won't need to remove when installing the Column Lock Eliminator, but it shows the location of the 3 screws:

COHPARTS, thanks for a product that will cut down on a lot of and when the column lock won't release!!

My b-in-law hasn't had problems with it, but after all the problems in the C5 and the fact that many '05 C6 owners are starting to experience problems, I got him the Eliminator to make sure he'll never have to deal with the problem!!!

Default Good advise

Bob - Thanks, that's good advise. Thinking about pulling the trigger on the body matching bezels while I am taking all this stuff apart anyway. have to figure out if It's better to simply spray booth the existing parts of buy already painted ones for $400+.

Utilizing stubbies is indeed the best way to go! After pods are unscrewed, electrical connectors are easy to get to!

That had been clearly spelled out by the DIY pioneers in the HUD removal/installation procedure!

With mine it was the lock motor that failed, and the part is plug and play and relatively easy to install once you get the steering wheel off. Failure to recognize reverse can often be the reverse sensor on the transmission going out, and it can keep the engine from starting if it fails completely, as I unfortunately discovered.

Default Module Change

I got my module from Corvettes of Houston a couple of weeks ago and finally installed it today. Not being in a rush, it only took about half and hour. Doing it again might take 15-20 minutes and that wouldn't be rushing. I wasn't going to wait to have problems so this was a preemptive strike so to speak. A tow job would cost a lot more than the module plus the inconvenience of being marooned somewhere would be a pain. Went for a 30 mile run to a local cruise night this evening and everything is working the way it should. I didn't have Scooby Doo towels for the console so I had to use ordinary ones. They worked fine too.

Default No Scooby Doo Towel

I couldn't find Scooby Doo towels so used regular generic ones. Don't they qualify. Nothing in the fine print about not using generics.

Sorry, no pictures on the towels. Just my black garage towels. No warranty I guess. Of course, I didn't get a warranty with the Corvette either so I'm not losing any sleep on either.

I should get my module in a few days. Since I live life on the edge I will be using some brown bath towels my wife just cycled out to the garage. I'll let you know how it goes.

Default Grandfather Clause

Thank heaven for the grandfather clause. Then again, I am a grandfather six times over. I took all the grandkids for a ride one at a time in the car. They had more fun than on a roller coaster. I did too.

Default column lock bypass

I just did mine today. If you have a power top you have one more connection to remove. The video was right on the spot. Thank you to CORVETTES OF HOUSTON for a good product and a helpful guidance video.
