Default What do I to replace the ring and pinion.

I just got my first vette. It's an 06 C6 Auto with the paddle shifters. I love the car but, damn thing needs some get up and go. It currently has a super low 2.56 ratio and I want to change it to probably 3.42 and I think that is the highest I can go without replacing the housing. 5 Star is replacing the whole diff under warranty but wont change the gears because they dont actually open the diff. So i'm getting a buddy of mine that is a well known mechanic around here to change the gears but I want to make sure I have everything I need. Thanks for all the help!

You might want to reconsider the swap to a 3.42 with the A6, first gear will be close to worthless it'll be so low. You already have overall gearing equal to a 6 speed stick with 3.42. rear gears.

I recommend that you don't change rear gears. You are already geared lower than a Z51/GS standard transmission.

If you have an accelertation problem it's not because of gear ratios.

maybe i need to change the transmission then? I just feel like it is so much slower than the 05 pontiac gto I had. I could smoke vettes on the launch but the vette would start catching up and/or pass me towards the end. I know in the goat I had a 3.46 rear ratio so I guess the trans must have been geared better just a lot heavier than the vette?

OMG, have any of you guys that are offering advice ever had a 3.42 gear swap? If it is such a bad upgrade why does it drop your et at the track? My car at 2000rpm in high gear is going 73mph.

I swaped out my 2.56 for a 3.42 gear on my C6/A6 and it is one of the best mods I have ever done. Yes you will lose top end MPH but 180mph is plenty fast enough. The bigger gear will really wake your car up, you will think you just added a 100 shot of N2O off the line.

You will love the swap, you will be able to shread your tires with ease and the car will pull easier in its higher gears. With this set up you will use 1-4 in the 1/8mile. While you are doing the swap I would suggest you replace the factory rubber transmission/rear end mounts with the Pfadt polly mounts. Wheel hop will destroy rear end parts real quick, with the polly mounts I have never had any wheel hop.

I bought a ZO6 rear diff because they are much stronger and they have a cooler but you can pick up a normal C6 diff pretty cheap and have it installed in hald a day.

Here is one off craigs list in Houston for $500.00

If the diff is being replaced as a unit, why not just get the 3.42 rear diff and be done.

I understand that, a ring and pinion Chang.e is not easily done on a Vette diff.

APPRENTLY SPECIAL TOOLS ARE NEEDED.

Also mating of the gears is critical.

I WENT WITH A COMPLETE SWAP.

RPM OR DTE are both forum vendors and can provide you with an exchange diff built how you want it with up grades. Check out THEIR SITES.

My buddy does his gears all he needs is shims and a dial indicator. Don't be rediculous. Oh btw the 3.42 in an a6 is excellent. My friend has a lsx powered a6 with a 300 shot and he uses a c6z diff so i doubt you'll run out of gear in the 1/4.

I can flat guarantee that a 3600 stall converter with the stock 2.56 gear will smoke an identical car with the stock converter and a 3.42 gear.

Just one glance at the 1/4 mi list shows every A6 bolt-on below 11.50 has a converter. The two quickest A6 bolt-ons are running a 2.56 gear.

The 2.56 car finishes the 1/4 in third and as a bonus, gets great gas mileage on road trips.

HOXXOH ...... good post

Just my opinion, but I would opt for a 3,200 stall converter (my GS has 2.73 gears)

Good luck finding a 3.42 gearset that will fit the A6 diff. housing.

From what I've heard and from previous posts the A6 diff. housing is smaller with different dimensions and the 3.42 gears from a Manual diff. won't fit the A6 diff case.

You know , there are alot of good people on this forum , and also there is more than one way to skin a cat. Just keep that in mind ,and do what your gut says , you'll learn from it . Unfortunatly it also costs money to learn.

For what it's worth ; one of my personal friends holds the pure stock NCCC drag record ,at adjusted to sea level of 12.18. It is an '08 auto.
