Default Map light problem

I have encountered a problem with a 2005 Convertible. The map lights will not shut off by using the switches. The switches have no effect, although they do function mechanically. Likewise, the starter button ligiht (green) also stays on. I pulled the map light fuse, which turned off the map lights. The starter button light remained on ( know it normally turns off in a few seconds). I then disconnected the vehicle battery, waited a couple of minutes, and reconnected the battery. The starter button light now functions normally. I inserted the fuse again, but the map lights were still on. I had to pull the map light fuse to shut of the lights. Except for the map lights, everything else seems normal. Am I the only one to encounter this problem?

An idea or two would help.

Push on the panel brightness button. It turns on and off the map lights. Many new c6 owners hit it with his or her left knee getting out of the car. I certainly did.

If pressing the panel brightness button fixes it...
You are the only one who had not encountered this problem.

We had one C6 where I had to disconnect the battery for a few seconds to get the lights to reset. When the battery was reconnected, everything was OK.

Default C-6 Map light

Thanks to those who responded to my query about map lights. The GM owners manual for the 05 was almost useless in resolving this problem. I solved the problem by pressing the dash dimmer switch as some suggested, but I also had to disconnect the battery to reset everything. All appears to function correctly.

I have an 08 Pacecar, and had not had this problem. As it only has 10k on it, I probably had not bumped the dimmer switch or I would already have known how to fix the 05.

Once I solved the problem on the 05, I again read the owner's manual. I still could not see this problem explained. As usual, communication between engineers or technical people did not translate sufficient information to technical writers, who often do not know the types of problems that can occur with the cars.

Thanks
