I have owned my 2012 Corvette base coupe for about six months. From day one, if I turn off the stereo and ac fan as the engine is running I can hear a faint "tap, tap, tap" sound coming from the engine. The tapping speeds up and slows down with the revs of the engine.
I took the car to the dealer and the service manager says the sound is "normal" and he adds that it is "probably" the electric fuel pump. He adds it is definately NOT a valve lifter sound as the temp of the engine has no affect, the car makes this sound all the time.
Again, the sound is very faint, but definately there...
Raise the hood and listen. This may help finding the offending part.
I think the Service Manage is full of Obama (BS).
even use a docs stethescope to help locate and then take it to a different dealer and show them and then complain to GM about the old one if he is wrong. May be working his way out of warranty work. I dont know if dealerships have a certain amount of dollars for warranty and get tight at the end of the year or not?
As a new owner, you may not be accustomed to the excessive valvetrain noise these cars make. Have you owned other LSx vehicles? If not, go to a local meet, cruise-in, etc, and listen to other C6's. If your noise differs from the rest, then perhaps you do have an issue after all.
A dealer tech should certainly be able to differentiate between an engine related tapping and a... "fuel pump" tap. Whatever that is.
