Default Radiator shroud question

Quick question for ya'll. Has anyone cut their radiator shroud for a non ram air CAI (K&N)? Looking at the design of it, the K&N looks like it would breath better if it got more direct air flow. Someone has to have done this before, wondering what the results were.

The K&N is not a CAI.

If you cut the shroud then any filter/filter box becomes a CAI.

It is not recommended to cut area #3, surging may occur at cruise speeds due to turbulent air flow into the MAF sensor. This applies to the LS3/7. I have areas #1 and #2 cut out which supplies plenty of cold air. Recently, the center retainers in #3 area started pulling away opening up a gap in the middle, this gap started to create a slight surge at cruise speeds. I closed the middle gap up and the surge stopped. Just passing along what I experienced.

Thanks for the pics and the info gents. Yeah, I would also think that area #3 would keep it "sealed" to the body. What is your recommendation on cutting the indented area in the center open? I guess what you would do with a Varoom. I would almost think that you may bring in hotter air because of the radiator. Thoughts?

I don't cut Area #3 on LS3 cars..more sensitive to disturbed airflow. These cuts are forward of the radiator.
