Default Service active handling

I've read several of the posts about the service active handling messages that show up on the dic. My issue is that my warranty ran out in June but the car only has 31,000 miles on it. Is there anyway that gm will still repair under warranty. Seems odd to me to have an issue like this on such an expensive car come up so soon after the warranty has expired. Has anyone been successful getting this repaired in this manner.

redwool,

I'm sorry you have had this service active handling issue. Could you send me your information (full name, number, address, VIN, current mileage, and involved dealer) so I can look into your situation?

If your base 3/36 warranty expired in June you may be able to get the repair covered under a goodwill warranty. However, you have to ask about it at the dealership.

Are you just getting the SAH message or are you also getting a Service Traction Control message. If you go to an autoparts store that has a scanner that can read ABS codes you may have a better idea of what is happening. Some issues are simple to repair but you need the ABS codes so you know where to start looking. All the service message tells you is the system has detected some sort of an error and has shut itself off.

I just got back from my dealer. The reason for the sah warning is the steering wheel position sensor has gone bad. They offered to have gm pay for the part but I would have to pay for the labor. I told them I would contact gm customer service and they said that would be fine. I called gm when I got home and they are looking into what they can do. The issue I had was labor on the repair is over twice what the part costs. Plus I paid for the diagnostic check today.

There is a TSB 06-02-35-0002B that has them put a clip on the connector for the steering wheel position sensor. It comes loose and causes the SAH message. Has that been done? It may correct the problem without needing to replace anything. See the first sticky thread at the top of this forum.

That involves early cars and was pretty much over with by the time the 08s were being delivered. My 08 which was built in Dec. 07 had the clip installed in the connector at the factory.

How much are they asking for the steering wheel position sensor?

OK so mine was acting up. I cleaned the steering wheel position connectors. Finally gave up when the service light stayed on and went to bed. Woke up to drop the car and now the light is GONE. It got cold this am... weird. All systems are working. So now I'm confused why it did not work yesterday and is working fine today.

Ideas?

mine did the same thing on the way to the dealership till i moved the steering wheel in and out. thats when the light came on. i would leave it in one position if i could but when your 6'3" and 280 you need all the room you can get to get in and out. lol

So delaer just called me and said that it is a body cnotrol module "THEY THINK" that needs to be replaced... They quoted me 722... then brought down to 650. HOW MUCH DOES THIS BCM REALLY COST???

I got quoted 2 hours to do the job. They said the price is $420.00 for the bcm alone.

Am I getting ripped off?

About to call the service manager.

i just got off the phone with gm customer service and they are going to take off the diagnostic fee from the labor leaving me a balance of $100 that i have to cover. this car has just rolled over 31000 miles, has been out of warranty for only 4 months and hasnt been driven in over a month because of the sah warning. this is the best that gm can do? makes me rethink my loyalty to gm.

If $100 actually fixes the problem I'd say you made out pretty good.

im going to go ahead and pay the money to have my car fixed. one thing that really bothered me is that the gm rep said that this is a part that wouldnt be fixed under warranty if the car still qualified. she said that the part failed do to normal wear. isnt that what a warranty covers is wear? doesnt matter why the part failed under warranty it would still have to be replaced. crazy stuff......

You have to be careful of what reps tell you. They are only a rep and sometimes get things wrong. If the car had been under warranty it would have been covered. Almost everything in the car is a wear out item. However, look at Piston rings. They are wear out items but wear out over a very long period of time and are supposed to last longer than the 5 yr/100K mile warranty. So, if your car is maintained properly and driven within the limits of the warranty (not excluded due to usage) they will repair worn piston rings if they wear prematurely. Brakes are a wear out items that aren't covered by the warranty unless the car is within the first few thousand miles. Brake pads on my 2700 mile 4 month old 97 were replaced under warranty due to wear issues. The steering sensor is supposed to last a long time and is covered.

By the way I think you got a good price. The way inflation is hitting some expenses a $100 is cheap. Even oil changes that used to be done for less than $20 are getting close to that amount.

Bill

i thought it would be. my car is a gm certified car so the warranty was extended 12 months and 12,000 miles. i am 17,000 miles below that and only 4 months removed when the light came on. im not trying to get by with something thats wrong. that part has obviously had a lot of issues in other cars and im sure gm knows it. dont know why they wont stand by their products for longer than 4 months.....

So you are really 16 months past the original 3 yr B2B warranty??? I believe the warranty you got with your GM Certified car was really a GMPP service plan which is run by Ally Bank and not a factory warranty extension. It is a good plan and just about covers everything that could go wrong on a car but it is a contract with a separate company. However, from the GM standpoint you are probably 16 months out of warranty and you got a very good deal at just $100 to fix the issue.

If you think you shouldn't have to pay the $100 write a letter to the President of GM (address can be found on line) and tell him you believe you shouldn't have been charged the $100 and you would like it back. Make sure you tell him what resolution you expect so he knows how to answer you and include copies of all paperwork. This has worked for me on two occasions and resulted in me getting exactly what I asked for.
