Default Humming noise

Hi guys,

So a couple weeks ago. I have noticed that there's an eerie humming (high pitched) noise at 30mph onward. It's really annoying and I cannot pin point where it is. I have taken it to the mechanic and they can't seem to figure it out. Is it a water pump problem? what can it be? The noise gets louder and high pitched at high speeds.

Thank you for your input.

When you are traveling at 40 mph have you ever tried putting the car into neutral to see if the noise changes or goes away? Let the engine rpms drop to idle level. If the noise doesn't go away it isn't engine related if it does then its engine related.

Is it only noticeable when you're on the gas? Could be your dif.

The black plastic cowl piece at the base of the windshield, passenger side, can crack and vibrate. Usually not high pitch, but easy to check. Lots of threads here about it.

What does a bad wheel bearing sound like? Does it occur all the time or only above 30mph? Also, does it go away when you let off the gas?

sound alot like a bad tire. I just had a passenger rear hub replaced at about 35k miles. I thought it was just the rear tire making the noise at about 30 mph, so I switch it out. It wasn't the tire, it was the wheel bearing. it continues even when you let off the gas.

Hi guys thanks for all your input... At 30-40-50-60 mph, I have tried putting the car on neutral and the noise is still there. I have gone to the tire shop yesterday and check if the tires or wheels are ok. They seem to be fine except for a lil bent on rear wheel (right). They even replaced my tires and rebalanced and everything yet the noise is till there. I think you guys are right it might be the wheel bearing gone bad. I only have 30k miles on it. I live in long beach area. Do you guys have any good recommendations on mechanics/shops etc. I took it to J&D corvette in Bellflower, CA, those idiots do not know what they are doing. Please advise. Thanks in advance!

Default Me too.

45K and strange humming noise at speed. 30 mph up, put car in netrual, turn off engine and the hum noise is loud and clear. I too thought it was tires or cowl, replaced tires, and securecd cowling. Test drive and HMMMMMM.
I will be replacing the rear wheel bearings and report back.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

I agree with Gearhead. Had a loud hum crop up on my 07 Z51 ragtop. Tapped the cowl piece to the windshield with clear shipping tape and hum disappeared even at 95 mph (TX tollroads ).

This is not the wheel bearings as some suggest. Trust me, I've had two Vette wheel bearings go and they make a nasty grindy, grindy, metal to metal noise.

I'll silicone the cowl down next.
