What was their reason given for recommending against the ATI?

They both said the ATI wasn't worth the additional (over $300) cost and that the new OEM units were fine for my application...no racing, a little giddyap now and then but that's about it. Even with that I would have preferred the ATI unit but the shop I'm taking it to (and the one I feel VERY comfortable with) admitted their GM and Corvette Certified Mechanic had never installed an ATI unit so I figured what the hell, let them do what they feel comfortable doing and worst case scenario I'm doing it over again in 4 or 5 years, no big deal.

That's a probable scenario, but certainly not the worst-case. OE balancers have been known to start wobbling like paint mixers much sooner than that.

I replaced mine myself with another OE unit a few years ago. It exhibited some run-out from new, but hasn't gotten any worse.

Mine lasted about 10 months with very little giddyap maybe 1 trip to the track. But it was near the end of 2011 so probably old one.

I'd really like to see this "new" oem part next to an old one. I've still read about the same part number being used recently that was used for the last 5 years. If there was a new one why would that be happening?

I'm with you, I'm still twisted up about this whole thing although I'm going with the OEM unit. Local friend of mine had his done in May/June of last year, dealer actually kept his car for almost a month until the new units came in as they didn't want to put an older unit in. I spoke to him recently and so far (I know, only 9 months), no chirping or wobbling. He also spoke to a GM Factory Rep at Carlisle who admitted they knew all along there was a problem and that the new units/vendors should eliminate any future issues with them. No one other than my friend has said they have the new unit installed, it would have to have been after June 2012, so right now that's all I have to go on. I'll keep everyone apprised of how everything goes with my car.

I had mine replaced May 17 of last year. They used the same part number as has been used for years. It is still spinning straight right now but who knows for how long. If it goes bad hopefully it will be in the next 4 months and maybe I'll get the new one put on it on warranty.

Good Luck...and when I get mine installed, I'll check the number and post what it is....

Not that it concerns me, I have an ATI. Just curious.

So much hearsays going on about the new oem replacement.

Where is a single photo on the new one???

Not even Forum Vendors will step up - very suspicious, logic would doubt, if indeed there is one!

Until I see one I don't believe there is one either.

Guess my 09/15/2011 build-date 2012 GS is going to have the 'old' style, then . Anyway, how likely are those things to fail (yes, the old ones) during the life of the car on a fully stock engine, with no track time? And at what mileage? Will probably have to keep an eye on it after year #5, right? Thx.

Believe it or not I've read on here cases where it was wobbling after 300 miles on a brand new car. It can happen any time without mileage or age having anything to do with it. Mine was at 47k miles when it failed.

Maybe one of the GM parts suppliers here on the forum can chime in and let us know if in fact there is a new one. GM Parts House or others?

And if so, WHEN it came out . And if they're really nice, what is the difference .

We're placing lots of emphasis on it looking different and on a new part number, wouldn't it look pretty much the same, maybe a new bonding method or a new type of elastomer? And as to the part number, could they keep the same # to make things easy for their parts system? Maybe just get a new vendor but keep the same #?

I wouldn't worry too much as I drove mine with a wobble for at least 15k miles. Get to it whenever you can though.

? You drove for how long...were u getting any vibrations under 2k rpms because i am and don't know if i mentioned it earlier but its s/c and the shop i want to fix it is almost 600miles away and he highly recommended Ati over stock if you have the cash for one. I know that's the one im going with because i don't want this problem to surface again. Called the shop who installed kit and they were no help that's why im going to drive an additional 4hours to someone i think is a lot more trust worthy. But i didn't know if it would be safe to drive the car down there without causing any further damage if any.

Every time I read these threads I get nervous about my balancer. I started getting nervious at about 20K on my car. At that time I noticed a wobble but no chirp. I now have 146K on my 07 M6. It has the same wobble and the same belts. The belts still look great believe it or not. Just my 2 cents. I would go with the OE part.

It will tell you when it needs replacement by a harmonic "chirping" of the main belt. Unless you hear it, forget about it.
