Why are the rocker covers insulated?

Why are the rocker covers insulated?
I assume the rocker arm cover insulation traps ex manifold heat near the heads.
Once you move to headers seems there would be more heat down there.
Some guys remove theirs altogether and use coil relocation. I like the look.
GM put the insulation there for a reason, anybody know the logic?
