Default Curious place for rust

Pulled the HUD out of my 06 this week-end to see if I could fix it or if I had to replace it. The outside of the box and all the screws looked in pristine condition, only 30k on the car. Here is the weird part, every screw inside the box had a rusted head. In addition, whatever plastic piece the screw was holding was eaten away. Some to the point the screw was no longer holding anything, just a big hole in the plastic around the screw head. I've never seen rust eat away plastic like this before. It looks like GM may have treated these screws with some type of chemical that is detrimental to both the screws and the plastic parts they touched.

no picks, hell I'm lucky to type the post. I'm still working on my skills here. It was suggested by a friend of mine that once the screws became rusted the vibration when driving may have eaten away the plastic. I don't know, still seems weird.
