Default stock LS3 heads???

I know im going to get flamed for this question but I searched & didnt find my answer. So here goes....

Does an LS3/L92 feel sluggish on the low end with the huge 260cc runners? Enough to notice it?

I have a L92 longblock and I got the L92 heads up for sale. I was going to "downgrade" to a set of a milled stock 243s and install a FAST 102 intake and eventually install a set of AFR230s or TFS 235s. Now im rethinking this plan. I know the LS3 heads can make really good power but I dont want the low end & throttle response to be soft. I like lowend and wicked throttle response.

The heads are off and the motor is on a stand. Flycutting the pistons and milling the L92 heads were another idea to get the CR up which would help out low end. What do you guys think?

I see cammed LS2's with stock 243s & FAST intakes (and supporting mods) making 455/430. Typical cammed LS3's with stock heads 470/430ish. I wonder what the LS3 would put down with the stock, milled 243s & FAST. 460/435?

thanks

Your question seems a little funny. You say you want low end power, but you use max power HP figures for the comparison. I guess you'd need to define "sluggish" and the RPM range of "low end".

If you have an A6, a converter and tune will be more effective in changing your "sluggish" opinion.

If the H/C combo is right I.E. compression , cam profile . We have made 505 whp with our max effort ls3 H/C package on our stingy mustang dyno .12.25 CR and pistons where fly cut . Low end was lacking [ TQ was more then stock but didn't start separating till 4300 rpm ] but once we put 4:10's in it was outstanding . The last car we did was a 2012 camaro convertible she was a little on the heavy side +750 lbs over a c5 or c6 ... This would all depend on car combo . A6 ? stall ? gears ?

I have a 6 speed with 3:90's so that will help out. When I say sluggish, Im talking about the throttle response & how "exlposive" the power comes on in the lower rpm range.

I have a ls2 with ls3 heads and intake. 235/.239 cam. It is a stalled auto. 3200 vigilante. I didnt flycut the pistons since this is a new cam from texas speed that allows you to go bigger without flycutting. It is a hair sluggish on initial throttle but i attribute that to a good size cam. But trust me when i put peddle down its a monster the power is immeadiate.

cool! thanks, Ive been researching and it looks like im going to stay with the L92 heads. Mainly because im on a tight budget. If I had the cash it would be a FAST 102 & a set of TFS 235s.

Spinmonster on here has been messing with LS3 cams for years now. He's not a vendor. Just a dude trying to get great power under the curve and great drivability. Many people have installed cams the he spec'd out. Just do a search on here for "Spinmonster Cam" in the advanced search feature. You can narrow it down further by searching title only.

His stock compression manual trans recommendation is 230/234 .613/.598 114+2.

Comp cams. Ask for a custom grind

230 XFI lobe
234 XER lobe
114 LSA
112 intake center line

From what I've found here that cam makes anywhere from 480's to 505rwhp. Depending on supporting mods and tuning. That's great power for a cam that your wife wouldn't even notice being there.

Since you mention decking the heads and flycutting to raise compression, he might have other advice for you. PM him and see what he says.

Yep I know all about the Spinmonster 230/234 cam. Im looking at it, the EPS 230/238 cam & possibly the G6X3. I will be flycutting the pistons so I can get the heads milled for higher CR.

Doesn't GM use the same heads on some 6.0 and 6.2L truck motors? Don't think they would use them if sluggishness resulted. Like one of the other guys mentioned, get the combo right. That will determine how sharp your rig feels at various rpm's. Get the compression ratio, cam size, and DCR right for the converter/gears you're running. Pat G is your friend

Your numbers are on target for a 230/234 cam in LS2 applications (455/430) but the LS3 with that same cam averages 490/440 and we see some cars hit 500/465 with cams in that range.

No they dont feel sluggish but when you drive a higher compression LS3 with Trick flow 225s or 235's you will know what sharp throttle response is. Compression for a 230/234 on 93 octane should be around 11.7:1 at sea level to have similar dynamic compression to a stock cammed LS3.

Based on verified G6X3 cammed Ls2s with TF 225's making 530rwhp, an LS3 with the same combo should make 540-545rw. Stock and ported LS3 heads arent making anywhere near that.

Cam your LS3 and save for TF 235s and then sell your LS3 heads to offset the cost. I've used TF 235s on the Ls7 and got 578rwtq but bigger isnt always better as the old AFR 205 showed us back on the C5. I'd go TF 225 for the LS3 unless its a mammoth cam like the G6X3

Spin... What about a 6 speed with 3.90's ? Would you recommend TFS 235's then with a smaller cam than the G6X3? Or is the power difference negligible?

Thanks
