Default steering rack install help

im going to b reinstalling my steering rack in my 2008 z soon. i messed up and turned the wheel with the rack out so what do i need to do to recenter the steering position sensor. i also believe i damaged the clock ring so i have unhooked the airbag for now as i dont want it to deploy when i hook the battery up. im just woried about the steering sensor being off and causing the stability controll to act up. any help is greatly apreciated

I have had several steering racks out and have never had any trouble with steering wheel and wheels lineing up with each other if thats what your asking. sit in car and turn steering wheel to where you think it is straight by eye. bolt your tie rod ends to wheel assemly and as long as you havent turned tie rods in or out you should be ok.last thing to do is bolt steering column to steering rack.it can only go in one way

There is an alternate way. Use the built in alignment aid in the steering column. I used a drill bit that was a snug fit.

thats only needed if you have disconnected intermediate steering shaft from steering column.if you have only unbolted on steering rack end you will be good to go

So that means you can't use it otherwise? I prefer it locked in place rather than eyeing it. To each his own.

Im sure i can get it bolted back together just fine. My concern is the electronic end more than anything like making sure the steering sensor is centered as i have no idea how meany times the wheel has been turned in either direction, and what damage i have done to the clock spring. Thanks for all the replies and i wish i had known i could lock the colum like that. Would have saved me a big headach.

Keep that locking of the steering wheel in mind when you do or have done, a front end alignment. One of my biggest complaints has always been about the steering wheel not being centered after the toe in/out has been adjusted. The techs would always hold the SW in place with a little stand that sat on the seat cushion. Not very stable and they never get it correct.

I would buy a clockspring and install it before you re-connect the battery, unless you want an airbag fault light that the dealer will want to go through your whole system(liability) and charge you accordingly before they will just clear the code with their tech-2. I did this on my now gone 04 GTO, The steering wheel turned too much while disconnected from the rack and broke the electrical connections to everything in the steering wheel including the air bag. Hope this helps you out.
