I installed a new mgw shifter in a 2012 base c6 and used stock shifter ****. I did everything to the book except I tightened the bolts that hold shifter to tranny very tight and did not realize there were set screws that I was suppose to tighten. These set screws hold the bolts tight so they won't back out. Mgw said this could be my problem as the shifter ball is bottoming out in the tranny causing the tapping noise. My problem is at mid range rpm I am getting a breif tapping sound almost like when your drive shaft hits your exhaust. The tapping is not very loud nor do I feel it but it's definitely coming from the shifter. before I tear it apart again to loosen the bolts I wanted to know if anyone else had this problem and how they fixed it. Thanks.
did you pull the shifter box out? I don't remember any set screws on the shifter itself. I also tightened w/ loctite those 4 bolts. could the shift rod lock nut not be snug ? maybe the **** also ?.
some have used teflon on the **** to dmapen the rattle.
I don't have an MGW, but have removed the shifter box, lube it, and align it perfectly on my '12 GS. And there're NO set screws. So you must be talking about the MGW itself. And on that front, I've read their instructions, and they provide a 'T' tool to avoid tightening the screws too much. I'm assuming you didn't use that, and tightened the crap out of them instead, forcing the shifter lower than it should. Hopefully you didn't permanently deformed anything, but there's only one way to find out: redo it. Good luck.
Only tighten the MGW shifter bolts using the "T" supplied allen wrench. The allen wrench will twist to eliminated over tightening of the bolts. Use loctite on the bolts. Finally, tighten the side set screws with the supplied allen wrench. Over tightening the shifter bolts crushes the gasket that may cause vibration and bottom out the shifter ball. Put a generous amount of grease on the shifter ball.
I put some black RTV silicone in the shifter **** and secured it to the shifter rod. Wipe any excess and let sit overnight to dry. This helped to reduce shifter rattle/vibration when cold. Hope this helps.
I had no set screws on my MGW, so I can't figure what you are talking about. As mentioned the T-wrench supplied with the kit is used to tighten the bolts properly. The ball fits into the shift rod and I can't understand what you are "bottoming out" on. You need to better explain what you are talking about.
I agree there are no set screws, however the only reason for not overtigtening the shifter mounting screws is so you don't strip out the threads, i doubt you could bottom out the shifter ball by being overtight, is it possible you don't have the rubber on the shifter mount box sitting properly inside the bracket on the transmission torque tube ?

The new design MGW shifters ( I purchased one 3 months ago) have set screws on the side of the shifter next to the mounting bolts. When you tighten the set screws it pushes against the mounting bolt head to prevent them from backing off. This method with the addition of loctite will prevent the bolts from loosening up.
Yes, you do not want to over tighten the shift bolts screws for two reasons. 1 - you may strip the threads of the shifter box. 2 - you will crush the gasket between the shifter and shifter box causing the shifter ball to bottom out. This was explained to me by MGW (George). This is why you tighten the shifter bolts using the supplied allen "T" wrench. The wrench will start to twist preventing over tightening of the shifter bolts.
Note: On the instructional DVD, it did not show the MGW shifter with the side set screws. I believe an instructional sheet was inserted with the DVD.
