Default How is the valve cover cap sealed?

My right side valve cover cap was removed. I have been told that this is a sealed cap and some tabs could have broken and fallen into the motor. A GM mechanic resealed it and when I asked him about those tabs he said their are none. It's just an "O" ring.

Does any one know how this is sealed? Thanks, don

If by "right side" valve cover cap you mean the oil fill cap on the passenger side you're OK, if you mean the drivers side then you might have a problem.

Since you have a Z06 with a dry sump, do you mean a cap that looks like an oil fill but is not?

Go to their parts dept and have the guy at the counter pull out the service manual and show you.

This last link is same thing that happened to you. It explains how the connecting rods etc could be damaged.

Still confused. "Right side"? The right side would be the passenger side. The left side (drivers side) valve cover on a Z06 has a fake oil fill cap that has tabs that can be broken off if/when the cap is removed.

No - the "fake oil fill cap" is on the right side valve cover.

Here's a picture of an LS7, and you can see the cap on the front of the passenger/right side valve cover:

This is a potentially very serious problem, so I would take it back to the dealer and do some very serious talking with them.

Not only might you have plastic parts circulating around under the valve covers, but in the oil system as well.

An even more serious concern would be if they poured the oil in through there - forum members have had engines ruined from that being done.

Good luck, and let us know what you find and what the dealer does about it.

Bob

He did have a guy pour oil in there by mistake and the cap was pryed off to do it. Its just a question of did pieces break off of it and go into the engine.

Yes, the guy poured oil in the right (passenger) side valve cover. The mechanic told me there were no tabs. That's why I want the forums opinion. I'll look at the links I was given and talk with the parts people.
