Twice this week I have experienced a sudden loss in oil pressure that lasts for just a few seconds. The pressure guage drops to almost zero and I get a warning chime and "low oil pressure" display on the DIC. Both times were after driving at a steady 60 mph for about 20 mins, then pushing in the clutch and braking for a traffic light as I entered the city. The 2nd time it happened, I purposely looked at the tach and observed that it stayed at around 750 rpms, which is normal for idle. The pressure then quickly returns to around 40 psi and stays there, even in stop & go traffic. A check of the dipstick shows that the oil level is good. Anyone have any ideas what is causing this? I replaced the sending unit last year after it began acting up (peg at 80 psi), which is a known problem with these cars, but this seems a little different. Help!
Never dealt with it but the guys here generally say a low pressure issue tends to be the pump pressure relief valve. If at all possible you should verify the low pressure with a mechanical gauge tapped into a block oil galley plug.
Be patient for a couple days as the knowledgeable guys chime in. Here's just one discussion to read to give you some ideas:
does it happen after the oil has been in for a while ? are you using a quality oil filter ? how about the sending unit ? Ac Delco or aftermarket ? you may want to replace it again or at least gain access to it and examine the connector. is it snapped in all the way ? are you using any oil, or is it more than usual ?
take your time and you will figure it out.
